August fledglings fly over here - chatting and Flying will help us persevere!(798 Posts)
Here we go again - another month for us to tackle our clutter and get on top of our housework!
If you’re struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun), you need Flylady.
Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.
Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.
Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.
From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.
Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):
1. start or repeat baby steps
2. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
3. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress).
More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.
Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!
Three key points to keep in mind:
1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.
2. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
3. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.
If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.
If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.
And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.
We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!
I'll be back later to post the first babystep for tomorrow and the rest of the links.
<leaves out and >
Thanks for last month toffee and for stepping into the breach again!
Since I still have 3 and a half weeks of school holidays left (with a short break away) I think I will be posting a lot this month. Determined to kick this house into shape this m I nth before the grind of the new school year starts and the new baby arrives in December.
Lounge is looking great after today even though only half of visible stuff done (dining table and bookcases still need doing as does all storage space).
Wow toffee thank you so much. It probably is about time I took the lead for a month - but I'm not entirely sure how to do links. I did my first this morning so will keep practising in case it was a fluke. :-)
Oh when in December are you due engels ? We have lots of December and January birthdays in my family
Newbie to the thread here, I have a Ds1 18, ds2 8, dd1 6 and dd2 4 weeks, really struggling at the moment to get much done as the baby wakes as soon as I put her down, but I really want to get on top for when I return to work in November.
Toffee for last month and this!
Parking mop and bucket for when we get back.
oldies regulars and newbies.
shitatusernames - you have your hands full there, especially with the velcro baby. Welcome to the thread.
Back to the start again tomorrow morning with babystep number 1: shine your sink. Yes, it sounds absurd when you have clutter all around you, but it's designed to give you a confidence boost. The babysteps are all about small, manageable steps and building new habits.
Friday is the day to declutter your bag and car. It is also sometimes known as Fuck Friday on this thread, thanks to a Bitchy typo .
For those who have mastered the babysteps, there are missions. Friday's mission is here: spend 15 minutes in the hall, porch and dining room binning your clutter. That's five minutes per room.
For regulars, Friday's flight plan is here.
Planning on an early night tonight in the hope that it gives me energy to declutter tomorrow. Sadly, the dining room did not get decluttered today after all.
<waves to Blue> Have a lovely holiday!
Welcome to new people - the system does work but the chat is more fun than the housework.
HUGE thanks Toffee for both last month and for taking on this one
Really hoping to be around a bit more in August as I am having to be more organised. Sadly getting a cleaner for the summer didn't work out so some major planning has been required. We have:
7-10 - me working (DC asleep then watching Commonwealth Games)
10ish - breakfast
After breakfast - washing up, jobs, morning routine then decluttering with children - 1 thing in DD's room, 1 thing in DS's, 1 thing in ours. DD's room looks the best now as she has really taken to the decluttering (from a child who at one time couldn't bear to part with a single scrap of paper )
Afternoon - fun stuff
We are a week into it and it seems to be OK.
Luckily I have been checking out the local running club so am running with them in the evening twice a week which leaves the mornings free to work.
Failing on early nights as keep staying up to watch Tonight at the Games because Claire Balding is fab
Time for bed now though...
Thank you for stepping in Toffee and for everybody else's lovely comments. Dgd is making progress but is likely to be in hospital for another week. Dms friend is still in ICU sedated so we are waiting and praying.
Today is however dds birthday so I will be focussing on my blessings.
Flywise I will be doing just enough to make the house presentable for visitors so to do :
Marking place! Thank you for the new thread toffee.
I cheated yesterday, I knew I wouldn't have time today so I tidied my handbag and purse an car when I had a moment. I shall have it valeted this saturday.
No more washing for us till monday.
Will be back!
Happy birthday to your DD mercury, have a great time celebrating, looks like a beautiful day for a picnic!
Sorry to keep dipping in and out - this housework lark seems to be going in waves at the moment!
Busy day today as we have my mum coming for a birthday lunch. I am 39 weeks pg, sore and uncomfy and want this baby OUT!
MW appt for stretch and sweep

Well I am out of bed
eating coco pops in front of MN
Right, morning everyone. New month, new organised me!
- Change my Facebook photo to one of DS(8) and his new money-raising hair-cut. He finally got the red and blue mohican he has wanted for a year and has so far raised about £130 for MacMillan's Shave or Style campaign. I am getting some very judgy looks
- Order various washout hair dyes for said mohican - who knew you could get hair shadow and hair mascara?
Will start with the power of 3 and see how far I get.
Mercury - enjoy your picnic and your DD's birthday
KiaOra - it's not cheating it's being organised
I've arranged a play date this afternoon for DS with a boy who will be in his class at school as suggested by his teacher. I'm terrified. I want them to get on and also to be friends with his mum. I keep thinking of all those threads on here: I'll judge you if your house smells of cat/ your toilet isn't immaculate/ you don't have the right coffee... I spent all last night cleaning the kitchen. Just need to sweep and mop the floor and vacuum carpets, then poo pick (cats) in the garden. No doubt then we will arrange to meet in the park!
Lairy - I'm not surprised housework is going in waves at 39 weeks pg. When it was me it had gone to pot completely long before then.
Mmmm - cocoa pops
Trazzles - try not to panic (easier said than done) just enjoy having an adult to talk to for a while. Remember MN is NOT reflective of the population at large
Feeding dd2 at the moment, she goes 5-6 hours for her 1st part of the night so I'm very lucky.
Have my cousins 2 kids whilst she works then it's town to pay in cheque, aim for today is to hoover, clean the sink, my work top is ok as I done that last night.
I'm finding if I plan too much it just doesn't get done and I end up annoyed.
Happy Birthday to DD mercury ! Baby due week after Christmas so who knows when he/she will arrive! My parents are arriving on NYE (arranged before we k ew I was pg) and with DC1 I would have freaked out, but now ill just be grateful they're there to (hopefully!) see DC2 and help with DS. They're not staying with us anyway.
Sounds like you have your hands full shit , especially with your cousin's dcs as well. Do you use a sling with dd?
kia - not cheating! FL says you're never behind, bur it's okay to be ahead!
feet I am of running. Missing my exercise routine.
Good luck trazzles
lairy at 39 w pg that is an impressive list!
Thanks for links toffee
Okay, so bookshelves did not happen. The big one whihc I want to move DS's books to is broken at the bottom (ikea Billy and the back has come away) so dh and I will empty it and the cupboard behind it (we have it on wheels in a door frame so it rolls back to reveal our
junkhole secret cupboard) and he will squeeze in the cupboard and fix it.
Today I will
Pop to shopping centre for errands
Tidying up from my de luttering/washing from yesterday
Do a declutter/reorganising task in the lounge - table, or tall dresser or start on cupboard with board games.
I've decided it's going to be a lazy one
Thanks feet I know you're right. Mainly because I love wedding lists and also don't think it's necessary to stop all alcohol consumption just in case one of the DCs suddenly becomes violently ill during the night.
DCs are up and breakfasting. Operation "find the kitchen floor under later of dirt" starts imminently.
No I don't Calling but it's something I'm looking into, although she has been in her moses basket the past half hour so I've managed to clear the kitchen table of junk, so we have somewhere to eat now lol.
My cousins kids are 9 and 6 so not too bad to be honest and only here an hour
Next task is to clear the work top where the boiler is, I just dump everything there lol, I sorted some of the cupboards out the other day, not finished it yet but I've made progress.
Think some wine needs to be bought for tonight and actually thinking about it reading about others who are in the same boat is really motivating
MW appt for stretch and sweep Make list of tasks to delegate
Make birthday cake with kids
Wrap DM presents Do DM card Swish and swipe downstairs bathroom
Clean utility room
Shopping centre for errands
decluttered car and handbag
hot maintenance wash
now home and about to have lunch. Then will have a cool afternoon in the lounge (baking outside) doing gentle tidying/finishing photo album while tv is on /ds plays with his trains.
Just reading and running, sorry. Managed to get some sleep last night and am feeling better today, so am trying to catch up on jobs
and not get caught up on MN.
Kitchen counters tidied and wiped down
Swished and swiped in bathroom
Replaced loo roll
Put some laundry away
Paid DS2 50p for cleaning stains on the carpet again (child labour thriving here)
Home ed planning for next term
Shopping with DS2
Started sorting out paperwork <grits teeth>
Am determined to make inroads into our cluttered-up dining room today.
