Hoovers - how to do a deep clean?

(16 Posts)

I have a miele hoover, which works really well, except it smells grim, even with fresh filters sprinkled with lavender oil. Ahem.

How on earth can you clean a hoover properly?

The hose and attachments you can wash in the sink and hang up to dry.

Check your instruction book to verify that you have found, and replaced or washed, all of the filters. Ours has three.

You can sponge round inside the belly with a damp sponge and WUL. No actual water, though, and put it on the draining board propped up with the electrical end higher so nothing can run down into it. If there is dust trapped in crevices, a small paintbrush will brush it out.

The new white or silver dustbags are better for trapping dust. You can also get dust-mite sachets to put in the bag, branded Bouchard I think.

Are your carpets smelly or doggy?

If it is a better vac than your old one, it will take time to get the old dirt out. Consider hiring a shampooer.

Instruction booklet? Eek! nope, not got one of them! Its pretty old anyway, and I got it from ExP.

Three filters. OK. I guess I can check the serial number and see how many filter there are I can access. I can only see the one which I change, at a glance.

What is WUL?

I am not a goodhousekeeper! So thanks for those tips. No dogs. But plenty of fecking mice. And a vile, synthetic dark blue carpet courtesy of skinflint landlord.

I would like to avoid commercial carpet shampoos, as I have eczema and asthma and find these are a no no. Maybe when the dibs are in tune a steam cleaner would be a good investment.

Yours might still have a label on the bottom. When you find out the model number, write it in permanent marker on the inside of the casing, where you will see it when you change the bag. Also write the correct bag type number there.
Just buying the same bag as last time only works if nobody ever bought the wrong bag.

if like me you are somewhat asthmatic, then I actually think a carpet shampooer is your best bet. True, there is detergent mixed into the warm water, but the machine sucks it away almost immediately, so effectively that the carpet feels almost dry to the touch.

your carpet will be full of filth and allergens. If you have not used one before you will be astonished at the amount of mud, builders dust, toenails, pet hairs, grit, bogies and dead spiders that the collection tank holds after you have finished.

It is usual to leave the doors and windows open for a day or so to let the carpet air afterwards.

Don't! I don't choose to have carpet. Circumstances have put them in my way. Normally I would choose hardwood flooring.

Anyway, cant afford a shampooey thing. so back to cleaning the vac!

But advice muchly appreciated!
