Thanks, everybody! I suppose I'm just used to a slightly different-smelling vinegar that I don't associate with the chip shop so much. I do find it quite effective for cleaning, especially when combined with bicarbonate of soda. CakeL, I didn't mean to offend you, sorry!
I use the clear malt vinegar 60p a bottle to soak off limescale (taps, toilet, kettle etc) but otherwise I find Ecover cream cleaner is the tops for getting everything else sparkling. Doesn't take much effort either. Never noticed a vinegar smell once the former is washed off tbh
Vinegar is only really good for clearing limescale. You wrap a cloth soaked in it around the faucets and in 12 hours (during the night) it's sparkling. But it's fairly useless for other stuff. At least in my practice.
I'm from Canada and used to cleaning much of the house with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Do people in the UK not use vinegar to clean with? If you do, where do you get large quantities of cheap white vinegar? Not malt vinegar -- I physically can't tolerate barley malt, and besides, it would make my house smell like a chip shop. If nobody here uses vinegar to clean with, is there an eco-friendly, affordable alternative?
