Our cottage has cetral heating via a woodburner. Means lots of wood sitting around the fire which generates lots of mess/dirt.

Also think with the ash etc of a fire the place is so much dustier in the winter.

Lounge windows go into conservatory so can't really get the air circulating so well.

Apart from hoovering and dusting frequently anyone any suggestions how to get the place less dusty?

Do you damp dust? That helps to collect the dust into the cloth rather than swish it around back into the air when its dry.

I can't think of much else - you could look into an air purifier, or an extractor fan type system to pull the smokey air out, but that might be a bit more than you are looking to do.

Thanks oreocrumbs i do damp dust. Just feel everything is dusty. The light shade has fur on it every week

lpg boiler is perhaps the only answer. Dh will be like 'no way, me man, me make fire'.... (me woman me make divorce proceedings )

Same here, solid fuel heating = dust everywhere. Less with our current stove than the last one but still loads, I just dust. I don't think it really comes from having the fire lit, that is contained but it is ash from emptying it daily and coal dust from tipping it into the bucket, that sort of thing.

I would be very interested in any replies you get on this one ! We live in a very old house and the dust is unreal . I damp dust one day and the Very next day it needs to be done again!?

indith we don't even take an ash pan in and out and the dust is wicked. We only burn wood as dh cant stand the dirt off the coal (and the price )

I could dust everyday and still write my name in it. Soo frustrating.

Recently got a jute rud for this room as all wooden floors and thought it would make it cosier, which it has, but when i lift it to clean floors the dust that is underneath is shocking. It is like emptying the hoover! Disgusting.

How old is the stove? Is everything sealed that should be sealed? Sounds very, very dusty. I don't have to dust every day.

Our old stove though you could smell that fire smell as you came in or walked down the stairs which you shouldn't be able to do with a stove. It was very knackered. It was a LOT more dusty when we had that one.

I think an extractor fan will not be the answer, as it will interfere with the airflow up the chimney, and might even suck fumes into the room.

this is a more common danger with open gas appliances these days, probably because wood and coal burners are much less common.

Indith , it is pretty old and scabby and im sure it could do with being replaced but too skint at the moment.

We have replaced cord on door seal etc and flue has had some areas resealed but overall it could be better. It draws well so not worried about leaking smoke into room, it is, as you say the ash that is the problem, opening the door and perhaps there has been paper burning and ash blows out with the door. Bah.... Just aswell i don't mind living in a shit hole with a bit of dust.
