Oh, hello there. The title says it all, really--I'm looking for lovely candles but don't know where to start. Obviously my nose has taught me to avoid those horrid Glade and Airwick type things on supermarket shelves, but does anyone have any advice - favourite brands I might try instead?
I am quite adventurous with scents. My only preferences are that they must not be too synthetic-smelling. I know nothing. Please help!

[[http://www.jomalone.co.uk/products/3560/For-The-Home/Home-Candles/index.tmpl Jo Malone candles have been very popular with those with money to burn discerning types in recent years, but my recommendation would be to invest in an oil burner and some quality essential oils.
Yankee Candles m'dear. They are very nice well some are the work of the devil but most are very nice and the range is huge. You can get them everywhere now, but if you have any outlet shops near you they sell them half price and it makes them more affordable.
Both DP and I spend many and afternoon sniffing our way around the hallmark shop next to us

yankee candles, can be quite reasonable and have lovely evocative names.
Also come in naice colours to tone with your decor.

I love Jo Malone, or Diptyque. Diptyque "Baies" is the best, in my opinion. They aren't cheap, but they last a long time.

Yankee Candles are a bit airwick, tbh.
If you can't afford Jo Malone Pintail candles are quite good.

No not all Grimbles, depends on which one you pick. The range is massive so there is bound to be one that suits you

Jo Malone is best if you have £60, but my SIL bought me some Yankee Candles for Christmas and while at first I was a bit
now I have lit them I have found they are lovely. I have White Christmas, and I'm rather particular about my candles

Ooh, replies! <bounces>
At the moment I could stretch to one of the Diptyque or Jo Malone ones - my only issue being I'd feel iffy about purchasing on the net without smelling first, IYSWIM. Grimbles - those Pintail ones are certainly very reasonable - do they smell synthetic-y?
One more question - I have a big Molton Brown store near me. Anyone know if their candles are any good?

I think I might also track down a Yankee one tomorrow, too. I'm pretty sure I know a shop that stocks them. If I can only remember which one... <screws up face in concentration>
my neighbour has started selling scentsy - they do plug-in burners, & the smelly bits (which are lovely) are wax, so they're reusable. Only done as parties though afaik
Really nice smells & I'd get one, only I'd want to put it in the hall & I don't have a socket there
Oil burners are nice too but v expensive once you've got through a few tealights & bottles of oil

Ooh, lookitsee. I could try a mini Dyptique Baies one for twenty quid...

Do it! SpaceNK do a loyalty card thing too so you might get points (can't remember if you can get points straight away)

Some nice ones in TKMaxx - do a sniff test. Admittedly their stock might be a bit depleted after Christmas.

I didn't like the Molten Brown candles. The scent was fine but they didn't burn evenly and so a lot of the candle was wasted and I HATE that!

I love Lilly flame, they come in a tin with wide variety of smells!
I also am a Yankee fan, my local b and q sell the large ones for £12 (Glasgow) as opposed to about £18 in other places!
