Hi all, I gave birth 6 months ago and am having an inner debate about returning to work.
I didn't qualify for maternity pay in my old job, so claimed maternity allowance instead. That is due to stop in November, and my family will definitely miss that money. DH is in the forces, so not earning big bucks, and we rely on my MA at the moment for baby things and the odd grocery shop towards the end of the month.
I've seen a few jobs advertised recently. A few for evening office cleaners, which was what I used to do but during the day, and a few in bars that would also be evening work. Immeditely my brain sees the adverts and screams "money"....but then I think about it and I realise that I will probably struggle immensely. My baby is a dreadful sleeper...always has been. She goes to bed at 7:30pm, gets up at least 3 times in the night, and is a 5:30am/6:00am riser every single day. DH leaves for work at 6am, so I'm not sure if I would cope with taking care of DD by myself from 6am until 4pm, then heading off to work (using the hours at the bar as my example) at 5pm, finishing at midnight, driving the 30 mins home, doing my share of DD's night waking and then starting all over again at 6am!
We probably could scrape by on DH's salary alone, but it would be hard.
Am I just being a wimp? Or am I right in thinking I could be over stretching myself if I went for the bar job? Does anyone else work similar hours with a small baby?

You face a common dilemma; both mums and dads. It all seems rather daunting and fraught at the moment, particularly if you're not getting a good nights sleep either. We can all adjust to a particular income so I'd choose your next employment carefully rather than just taking anything for the sake of it. Good luck!

Wow that scenario sounds tough! Have you thought of training as a childminder?
