Freelance lawyer - anyone making it work?

Hello, does anyone here work for one of the freelance law firms (axiom, LOD etc)? If so, have you actually had enough work from them to cover childcare costs, and have you been able to manage your hours? I have been doing a bit of freelance legal work , through my own contacts, (following maternity leave from a city legal job) and have struggled with childcare with a toddler, as the work doesn't necessarily come during my son's three nursery days, and I haven't wanted to get full time cover with no certainty of income. I'd be interested to hear others' experiences as I'm trying to decide whether to continue.
