will i be better off if i go to work part time(8 Posts)
hi i hope anyone here can help me, im 30 yrs old and have 2 children age 6 and 11, my partner moved back in a year ago he works full time, we currently receive child tax credit and working tax credit and i am unemployed, i planned on setting up a mobile hairdressing business last year but due to ongoing tests for epilepsy and tourettes syndrome i have been advised not to drive the car until i have a diagnosis just incase i have a seizure while driving so unfortunately my plans to set up business went down the pan for the time being anyway but also my partner has a long commute to work so he takes the car to work everyday now and we cant afford to run 2 cars, he wants me to go and find a part time job cos he thinks we will be better off if im working and he is putting so much pressure on me to find a job without taking into consideration my limitations due to my seizures being a weekly sometimes daily occurrence which isn't going to go down well with an employer looking for a consistent employee, not having the car to pursue my career so id have to go down a different career route, two children in school and no family to help with childcare which would mean paying childminders in the holidays and ill health etc. he is continuously telling me he is right and im just being lazy and i could make more of an effort to find a job but i am not making excuses i would love to be able to play a part in providing for the home but how can i explain all this to him, is there any way of me proving my point and can anyone point me in the right direction of who i could speak to about any options i have, even taking out the fact im having seizures would i be better off staying a stay at home mum and stick to housewife duties or would i be paid enough to be able to pay for childcare........i know ive babbled on a bit here but i had to get it all out i am so frustrated and haven't got anyone else to talk to about this situation any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

You are always better off working, even if a significant part of your income goes on childcare fees (which won't be high working part time and considering the age of your children.
I would go as far as saying that the only decision I regret in life was to become a SAHM, my child and I will continue to pay DEARLY for it for many years to come.
i do my hairdressing from home as and when i can but its hard to get the clients to come to you, they might aswell go to the hairdresser, as my clients have told me they like a mobile hairdresser so they don't have to leave the house, i have regular clients (dry cut once or twice a week but to get to thse clients i have to use a taxi which is defeating the object, i am sometimes losing more than im earning
Are you eligible for ESA of whatever its called now due to having seizures? You may find (as my BIL did due to a heart condition) that you can get a job due to employers not being able to cover him with staff insurance.
If you don't want to claim benefits, you could get a job at a school as dinner lady or train as a TA (if you'd be interested). That way you shouldn't need child care as you'd only be working school hours and have holidays off.
i cant claim esa because I haven't been diagnosed, ive been waiting for appointment with different specialists. funny enough I went to my childrens school this morning and asked if there were any jobs available and I have managed to bag myself 2 days a week as TA which I will be starting in September, it is volunteering but it coul turn in2 paid work providing I make a good impression etc.....partner will still probably moan that im not bringin money into the home but he wont b able to call me lazy anymore which is a plus I suppose.
