Gifted and talented

Solving the definition of 'gifted'

I found a 'your gifted child' book lying on the table at borders today so had a good rifle through it and lo and behold I found some definitions

So...

Gifted the 'top' 200 out of a thousand
Very gifted the 'top' 100 our of a thousand
Genius the 'top' one in one thousand.

There was a very interesting discussion of 'top' but the consensus seemed to be that it was potential intelligence that they tried to measure and there was a few chapters discussing how this might be measured.

Interesting to note that the book was from the clearance pile

But what is said measure of intelligence?

Who decides?

MB - I actually wrote on my OP - 'now we can argue about whether one in a thousand is or isn't a genius' but deleted it before posting

GPAC - there were about 5 chapters on how to measure it, including some weird tests where pupils are given a box with some marks/lines in it which they have to turn into a picture.

I think the 5 chapters were saying that it was very difficult to measure and that one had to take into account a whole range of different measures rather than there being one unique test which could 'prove' it!

I think it might actually have been called 'the gifted child' rather than 'your gifted child' as it was quite hard to read so perhaps wasn;t aimed at parents?
