Hi anyone here doind/done Kumon and know what these awards are for?
Is bronze for doing kumon a year; Sliver = 18 months and Gold for doing Kumon 2 years? Feel a bit daft asking the Teacher ha!

Hi, I believe that they relate to progress and how far advanced your child is age wise in the kumon system. If they are one year ahead they X medal and so on I believe. This is what it was when my DC did it but that was a few years ago.

Isn't just for turning up?

I do like the idea of a 'sliver' award.. grin.

Ok I plucked up courage and asked. But I was told they have a graph plotting the results with line for 'age appropriate' level...if dc goes so many months above gets bronze (I think 1 yr but not sure?), 2yrs silver and 3 yrs gold...something like that. But he did get a new folder 'red' for being at Kumon for 2nd year smile

Any once else doing Kumon? Do you find the harder the maths the more your dc enjoys it? Ds is loving fractions! Plus no one has explained how to do them (they expect parents to do that) I ain't got a clue! So how he knows I do not know?

Sorry, but what is Kumon??

Hi Ibiza, Kumon is class a dc can go to once a week and they do booklets main subject is maths but ds just started english which is even better as ds really behind with comprehension. Ds has booklet to do every night and I mark the work every night. Ds loves it as repetitive...I think really good for dc with ASD because of structure and repetitive learning....may not be so exciting for a gifted dc as they may get bored.
It really concentrates on pure maths which I find school doesn't do as much these days...adding, subtracting, multipacation, division, fractions and I think it goes onto algebra also? but ds aint got that far yet..HTH smile

Thanks PipinJo.

Is Kumon for pupils who need extra help or more able pupils? I am just wondering because you posted in G&T. Dd (12) is very able and "gifted" and all the rest of it and has never had to do this work. She is level 8 maths at school.

ibizagirl It seems like it's death by worksheet; no actual teaching; children have to do work at home EVERY DAY, and they charge you something like £50 per month for the privelege.

I really wouldn't think it's the right thing for your DD smile
