Late friday night I started to get a head ache. Started at the back of my head. Really heavy pounding head. Went to bed about 11 and by then I was a bit achey all over.

Woke up yesterday with sore throat (no tonsils if that makes a diff) and same head ache. As the day went on my neck and back got stiffer until I could hardly move upper body. I was thinking start of flu maybe?

Woke up today much the same, al my joints in uper body are extremely stiff, cannot move my neck at all. My head spins everytime I move. It feels like my brain is too big for my head iygwim.

Even blinking makes me feel spaced out. I cant lift my arms and my lower back is agony. Legs aand feet feel fine.

No other cold/flu symtoms. Painkillers not touching my head and I take amitriptilyne (sp) which I thought may help joint/muscle pain but isnt.

Any ideas?

Sorry for spelling mistakes, even typing this is making my head spin.

lucjam Sun 24-Feb-13 19:53:11

OK if I'm honest and it was one of my kids I might suspect meningitis, sorry I'm sure that's not what you want to hear. It because a really bad head and stiff neck for me rings alarm bells. What do the people around you think?

MikeLitoris Sun 24-Feb-13 19:56:17

Im on my own with dc who think its kind of funny that I walk like a zombie.

My mum phoned and asked if I had a rash but I dont and I dont feel sick.

I may phone ooh just to be on safe side.

landofsoapandglory Sun 24-Feb-13 19:56:20

At the start of your post I was thinking it was the flu bug I had the other week, but the fact you can't move your neck rings alarm bells for me too.

Ring the OOHs or go to A&E tonight, please. It is better to be safe than sorry.

lucjam Sun 24-Feb-13 19:56:51

www.meningococcal.org/symptoms.html

Symptoms here. Hope its not and is just some horrible virus but couldn't just say nothing.

lucjam Sun 24-Feb-13 19:58:53

OK so I'm not alone in my thoughts, please go to a and e tonight. Let us know how you get on. Big un-mn hugs.

lucjam Sun 24-Feb-13 20:00:43

Plus, sorry to go on but a rash is often the very last symptom because it signifies that things are progressing to blood poisoning.

Pagwatch Sun 24-Feb-13 20:03:31

Mike
I don't know but honestly - call for help. You shoudn't be feeling so unwell that you can't tpe without feeling sick and dizzy.
Get your mum or call out of hours Dr or get to A&E

Pozzled Sun 24-Feb-13 20:03:45

Yes, I thought the same as previous posters, please do get checked out asap. Can someone come and stay with the DCs?

HavingALittleFaithBaby Sun 24-Feb-13 20:05:31

I had similar symptoms a few years ago - I ended up being admitted with suspected meningitis (after a while, the pain got so severe I started vomiting). I was in for 5 days in the end and diagnosed with a virus but I'm glad I went. I would seriously suggest you seek medical attention, just to be on the safe side. Is there anyone who can watch your DC?

Trazzletoes Sun 24-Feb-13 20:05:53

Stiff joints and painkillers not working are worrying signs.

I'd go to a&e. I hope it's nothing though.

MikeLitoris Sun 24-Feb-13 20:13:00

Thank you all.

Waiting for call bsck fron ooh.

It feels like my head is too heavy for neck. I will feel mighty silly if this just apulled muscle grin

lucjam Sun 24-Feb-13 20:16:14

Glad you called you have done the right thing pulled muscle or no pulled muscle!! Take care.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist Sun 24-Feb-13 20:18:43

You are doing the right thing by seeking advice but FWIW I had exactly the same symptoms last time I had flu.
Flu shouldn't be underestimated, it can knock you out for days.

Pozzled Sun 24-Feb-13 20:20:04

I hope it does turn out to be nothing!

Do you have a plan for what happens if they send you to A&E? Do you have friends or family nearby?

MikeLitoris Sun 24-Feb-13 20:23:16

Yes pil live next door so van ask them and dp will be home soon.

Thanks again all. Nice to get support rather than sniggers from the dc grin

Pagwatch Sun 24-Feb-13 20:26:06

There is nothing better than feeling silly after a fright.
I had heart checks when pregnant after sudden chest pain. I had pulled a muscle. Dh tells everyone I went to hospital with a broken bossom.

Feel better Mike x

MikeLitoris Sun 24-Feb-13 20:27:16

Ooh paggy please dont make me giggle. It hurts sad

Hope you feel better soon.

lisad123everybodydancenow Sun 24-Feb-13 20:30:54

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

landofsoapandglory Sun 24-Feb-13 20:50:18

I went to hospital with sudden chest pain once, too Pagwatch. It turned out I had pulled a muscle doing CPR at a first aid course the day before. I had never felt such relief at feeling so daft!

Hope you feel better soon Mike.xx

MikeLitoris Sun 24-Feb-13 20:51:55

Still waiting for call back hmm

I feel much better if I lay perfectly still with lots of pillows under my neck.

I assume anything really nasty wouldn't be like this?

cardamomginger Sun 24-Feb-13 20:55:55

Another one here who's worried about you. Please chase OOH if they haven't got back to you soon. TBH I'd be thinking about A&E.

MikeLitoris Sun 24-Feb-13 20:57:35

They have until 9.05. That will be an hour. Then i will call them back myself.

Possiblyoutedled Sun 24-Feb-13 21:00:02

Yes you are doing the right thing. I had those symptoms was t meningitis but was viral encephalitis.

herethereandeverywhere Sun 24-Feb-13 21:06:19

Please don't wait for a rash! Anyone who suspects meningitis please don't wait for a rash, I hate that bit of advice. The rash is the onset of septicemia - if you have ANY symptoms/suspect it's something serious please get them checked out at A&E/OOH, the sooner it's seen, the easier it is treated. Don't wait for septicemia before acting.

QueenBee245 Sun 24-Feb-13 21:11:48

I agree with going to A&E, if you suspect meningitis then you are not wasting the drs time, hope they get back to you soon

Lucyellensmum95 Sun 24-Feb-13 21:15:30

My money is on a trapped nerve actually - ouchie!! sad But yes, definately definately needs checking ASAP

nannyof3 Sun 24-Feb-13 21:15:53

While i was reading i was thinking meningitis or swine flu... But if u feel better when laying completely still then it does sound unlikely...

Maybe septic arthritis

Badvoc Sun 24-Feb-13 21:17:02

Are your feet cold?
Mottled?
If so phone an ambulance.
Don't wait for NHS direct to phone back.

IwishIwasmoreorganised Sun 24-Feb-13 21:19:18

Any news Mike?

MikeLitoris Sun 24-Feb-13 21:29:24

No ooh appts until 12am.

No point going to a&e as thats where ooh is.

I've had a little cry and am now propped up on setee with a million pillows. Hopefully they will get a cancellation and call me back.

QueenBee245 Sun 24-Feb-13 21:29:34

Vertigo maybe, my mum had it when I was younger and she felt a bit crappy for a few days before she had the full on couldn't get up

QueenBee245 Sun 24-Feb-13 21:31:42

A&E is usually run by urgency, if they suspect meningitis or anything serious you will get seen before people with appointments from OOH
Worst case scenario is they ask you to go back tomorrow but from your symptoms I highly doubt they will turn you away

HavingALittleFaithBaby Sun 24-Feb-13 21:32:05

IME OOH is attached to A&E but staffed separately. Seriously, I'd get one PIL to mind the kids and go to A&E with the other.

cardamomginger Sun 24-Feb-13 21:33:27

Please go to A&E. Please.

cjel Sun 24-Feb-13 21:33:35

I have had similar with migraines, but was pestering drs for day to keep confirming it!! A&E sounds good. You may jump queue?

Trazzletoes Sun 24-Feb-13 21:33:41

Yup I would still go to A&E.

IwishIwasmoreorganised Sun 24-Feb-13 21:35:07

It sounds more than vertigo to me, and some of your symptoms are very worrying. I would get yourself to a&e Mike. Better safe than sorry.

Xx

Bakingnovice Sun 24-Feb-13 21:36:41

Get checked out soon. X

OnlyWantsOne Sun 24-Feb-13 21:38:36

Go to a&e lovely please xx

Pozzled Mon 25-Feb-13 07:39:11

OP, I do hope you went to A&E last night. I have been worrying about you! Still hoping that it's something painful but minor and that you're feeling better today.

Please do let us know how you are.

Dirtymistress Mon 25-Feb-13 07:46:04

Have just seen this. I had meningitis in August just gone when 11 weeks pg. I didn't get a rash at all! Stiff neck, the worst headache I have ever had and light sensitivity. It's not that uncommon. Get checked out.

duende Mon 25-Feb-13 07:48:40

Hi, hope you're ok. For some reason woke up this morning and thought about this thread and OP.
Let us know you're ok, when you can.

MikeLitoris Mon 25-Feb-13 08:28:03

Thank you all for checking on me.

I did go to a&e and was seen quite quickly. The DR there says Its some sort of viral infection. He said possibly viral meningitis but as there is no treatment as such for that so I could go home with stronger anti inflammatories than I had. He said to keep hydrated and relax as much as possible.

I actually feel a bit better this morning. Still very stiff but my brain doesnt feel so big grin

HavingALittleFaithBaby Mon 25-Feb-13 08:57:18

Good job you got checked out. Make sure you stay well hydrated as you recover (that's where I struggled in a similar situation) and make sure you accept any help to look after the DC as you recover!

MikeLitoris Mon 25-Feb-13 08:58:47

I've had to come into work for a little while but plan on getting home to bed asap.

Thank you faith

What part of "relax as much as possible" did you not quite understand? Get yourself home! grin

Glad you are feeling better - but you still need to recover so do what the doctor ordered, drink lots and lie on the couch and MN all day.

I'm glad you got seen. Do take care.

HavingALittleFaithBaby Mon 25-Feb-13 09:21:54

Hopefully work will see how poorly you are?! shock Get home good woman!

MikeLitoris Mon 25-Feb-13 09:23:53

Just getting some stuff organised so I can really relax and turn the phone off, honest.

cjel Mon 25-Feb-13 09:49:28

Hope you do!!! take care.

gingeroots Mon 25-Feb-13 09:51:23

go home .
think being ill sometimes impairs one's judgement about things like "am I well enough to go to work " !

cardamomginger Mon 25-Feb-13 10:54:00

Was about to say well done for being sensible and getting yourself checked. but then read the part about you being at work?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!! WTF????? GO HOME. NOW. X

duende Mon 25-Feb-13 12:55:06

I agree with the WTF brigade, go home and chill, woman!
Glad you're feeling a bit better.

MikeLitoris Mon 25-Feb-13 15:27:47

I'm home and resting.

Feel less spaced out now but still very stiff.

Hopefully the painkillers will kick in soon.

lucjam Mon 25-Feb-13 15:45:46

Phew! Glad you are ok. Take it easy x

MikeLitoris Mon 25-Feb-13 21:58:20

Had a bad few hours and ended up back up hospital.

Dr thinks definitely viral meningitis but has given me antibiotics. That isnt right is it?

She said as I didnt want to stay in hospital she couldnt let me leave with nothing. As I have been ill for more than two days antibiotics and painkillers are the only thing she can give.

Im confused tbh.

Lucyellensmum95 Mon 25-Feb-13 22:12:02

Wow - thats really bad of the doctor - but there is a value in the antibiotics because it will prevent any secondary infection that often occurs when you get so run down from a virus. But WHY don't you want to stay in hospital? you are properly poorly lady!

Oh, gosh. Sorry, this sounds scary, I hope you are ok. Are you sure you shouldn't be in hospital? I had a mate who had meningitis and I don't want to scare you, but it was very serious.

MikeLitoris Mon 25-Feb-13 22:29:42

I will most definitely be more relaxed here at home.

I dont the stress and worry of a hospital stay will do me any favours.

I hadnt thought of the antibiotics like that lucyellen. Makes sense I suppose. I will make a start on those before bed.

Well, hope you do feel better soon. And take care - go in if you're worse.

(Sorry, I sound like a nag, hope you see I'm concerned rather than anything else.)

MikeLitoris Mon 25-Feb-13 22:35:56

I appreciate the concern lrd. I wont take any risks and if I feel any worse I'll be straight back in.

smile

Sounds good - have a good and restful night.

HavingALittleFaithBaby Tue 26-Feb-13 08:52:06

If its viral, there's not a lot they can do to be fair. With me in similar circumstances, they only kept me in to keep my nausea, dehydration and pain under control. It did take me some time to recover though. Take it very easy. Take any offers of help you get!

MikeLitoris Tue 26-Feb-13 09:48:10

Ive stopped being sick and have no probs with hydration tbh so Im happy to be home.

Im very lucky sometimes to have pil right next door and they are brilliant with looking after the dc. Older 2 are in school and the youngest is with pil now so I'm off to sleep the day away!

cjel Tue 26-Feb-13 21:52:29

How you doing tonight?

MikeLitoris Tue 26-Feb-13 22:05:18

I feel ok as long as I dont actually move.

I have been sick once this evening and I think that has knocked me back a bit I think.

Have much more movement back in my neck so thats a good thing at last.

Oh, yuck, sorry you're still feeling so bad. It does sound like a very good sign you have more movement in your neck, though. I hope you're better again, tomorrow.

cjel Wed 27-Feb-13 08:29:38

hope you had a good night and feel even better today.

HavingALittleFaithBaby Wed 27-Feb-13 08:30:52

If you're anything like me, it'll be a good couple of weeks before you're fult back on your feet. Make sure you take regular pain relief to keep on top of it. Hope you got some sleep!

earlyriser Thu 28-Feb-13 20:41:44

Has anyone mentioned Labyrinthitis yet? Could cause the sickness and feeling better when lying still. Not sure it causes stiff joints though, but definitely could make you light headed and discombobulated grin

MikeLitoris Thu 28-Feb-13 20:44:32

No one mentioned that early. I've never heard of it tbh.

Im feeling loads better. Completely wiped out and sudden movements are a no no but loads better.

gingeroots Fri 01-Mar-13 09:18:07

www.bbc.co.uk/health/physical_health/conditions/labyrinthitis.shtml

one of the presenters on BBC London ( regular midday onwards ,can't remember name ) was struck down with this last Friday .
He was describing his symptoms when he got back to work - sounds awful .

earlyriser Fri 01-Mar-13 10:10:23

It's an inner ear infection, and causes dizziness, when i had it, i couldn't make sudden movements of the head, was almost fainting everytime i stood up too quickly (or just stood up) and generally felt very travel sick the whole time. The symptoms are easily sorted with medication, but the infection has to just go in it' own good time.

MikeLitoris Sat 02-Mar-13 21:39:07

Well no one mentioned that as a possible cause. Doesnt sound like much fun.

I'm still amazed that I'm sooo wiped out. Took 2 of the dc to soft play today and I am exhausted! All I did was sit and drink tea for a few hours shock
