Has anyone had ear infection diagnosed followed by a rash?

Ds2 aged 1 was diagnosed with an ear infection on Monday. Prescribed antiobiotics as he was in so much pain. He's seemed a bit perkier day by day but no-where near his usual self. Still whingy and clingy and wanting to sleep all the time. He's now come out in a rash on his trunk and back which isn't going away. The doc said this morning I could stop the anti b's but he didn't think it was a reaction to those. Seemed very wishy washy to me. Anyone else had their child with an ear infection followed 3 days later with a rash?

Yes, I have. The rash can very often be part and parcel of the virus causing the cold that resulted in the ear infection. BUT, dd1 is allergic to penicillin and after being prescribed amoxycillin for her ear infection when she was 1, she came out in an allerguc rash. The allergic rash is pretty easy to identify. Have a look on the internet for "urticaria" - the spots are quite large and raised and appeared on her trunk and back. Any potential drug allergy is something that really needs to be investigated so I'd call in the doctor again to actually take a look at your son. In any case, if your child has had a rash for longer than 24 hours that isn't going away, I'd insist on a doctor seeing him.

thanks for that, I'll look it up now. He was seen this morning and the doc couldn't id it. I called a more senior doc this afternoon and he agreed to stop the anti biotics now. He said to bring him in tomorrow if the rash is still there as prominently. We talked about it being measles possibly but he said it usually starts behind the ears and on the face, not on the trunk and back. I'll have to see what tomorrow brings. I don't think its an allergic reaction, he's had amoxcillan before and had no reaction.
