Rejecting Antibiotics

I have a 6month old dd who has to take a daily dose of antibiotics to prevent urine infections. I have been administering the dose by syringe orally but she seems to have worked out what's coming and now clamps her mouth shut. Even when I do manage to get some in her mouth, she spits it straight back out again. Has anyone got any tips on getting her to take her medicine? She doesn't suck a dummy so the dummies that administer medicine won't work. She has to take this medicine until she's 18 months so I've got lots of practice ahead!

Hi, my dd has just been given antibiotics for tonsilitus, babies are not stupid are they!, we tried spoon, syringe, then finally tried by adding it to her milk - which so far is working and she hasn't copped on yet, hope this works for you, i know how frustrating it can be.

Corky I had to do this when dh was 4 weeks old for 6 months. I found that if I squirted it right down his throat instead of trickling it down the side of his mouth he couldn't spit it out.

It may not work for your dd, but my when my ds was a baby and had to have medicine during the night, I used to put just a bottle ring and teat containing the dose in his mouth and he used to suck it without waking up.

We have had to administer steriods and antibiotics so I sometimes joke that we could write a book about it. I lie dd on her back with her hands under my knees (just loose enough to prevent fighting hands) and then when she is crying/chatting I pop the syringe into her mouth and squirt the stuff into her cheek. She now loves it and asks for calpol everytime I open the medicine chest! (But still wont take the #/@ spoon!
