Tip of the day

Don't get in a panic over Christmas. Keep a box and put a little in it every week - small gifts, wine, nibbles, napkins etc. This way, you'll be more relaxed and less skint in December! keriku

Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

i am wondering if there is any point to me going to se the gp in half an hour. I am thinking we will be encountering more bugs at the surgery. I just worry about her chest.
I went to the gp he said nothing he can do sad

I'm fed up of being fed up and ill now, dd2 is only 3 and is coughing all the time bless her. We both went to bed as soon as I finished work last night and I will prob do the same later if my head doesn't give up banging. It feels like it's lasted forever I can't remember not being ill!

lurgy here, really pissed off. dd is finally asleep. i just feel so isolated when she is off ill.

i'm ill too, but don't care about me, i am a grown up, it's v distressing to hear her cough so much.

i might go to gp 2morro, but wonder if there's any point tho.
Dp started with a temp on 6th dec, Dd2 and I have been ill with the same thing (temp, cough, runny nose, feeling achey, headache - feel like I'm being kicked in the head) since the 9th dec I really need to get better asap, I've been to docs who said it's a virus and could take up to 3 weeks to fully feel better. I'm now at the point of feeling ok if I take painkillers at the right times and get enough sleep - the enough sleep/ rest is tricky though because I need to work and dd2 is waking us through the night. Roll on being better!

I'm on Week 3 and if anything I feel even worse. Temp today is 39.7 and I can't stop coughing. I haven't eaten since Sunday.

I went to work Monday and didn't quite make it to dinner time. When do I need a sick note?

Sorry if it's TMI but does anyone else wet themselves when they cough? It is driving me mad. I'm on normal pant liners but if it carries on I'm going to have to ask DH to go and get some Tena blush

Ours just seems to keep changing from one thing to another - DS had earache last week and now is onto vomiting, while I have an achey flu thing that last a couple of days, goes away and comes back again.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 18-Dec-08 08:00:35
Well done, NQC. Am proud of you. You give us hope. grin

Kitten - are you any better? I am feeling your melodrama here. My eardrum has burst which is just lovely really. shock apparently tres common after flu.

ds1 seems chirpy enough, ds2 still misery, my parents both have flu now...we are on our own I think today...don't you sometimes just want to throw in the towel?
DS2 definately seems better today, he got a wicked appetite. That's one week from when he first got ill. I'm feeling pretty much better today - still coughing like a seal, but I kinda feel like eating, and don't feel totally miserable.

looks like we are all pretty miserable! my throat is soooooo sore .. was trying to read ds his mr men books at bed time and it was so painful I could barely speak!

I have a new lurgy
<said in a melodramtic doomsday voice>
Woke up with another sore throat in the night. Now feel full of cold. I expect it is just a cold but for goodness sake! Completely forced myself to eat lunch today when I was out Christmas shopping as I really didn't fancy fainting.

Told dh rather pathetically that if I lost anymore weight then one morning he would wake up and all that would be left of me was my pjs! (colds do bring our the melodrama in me)
I'm on day 8 of the cough/throat/temperature one and been signed off for the rest of the week. It's bloody awful; but have just started eating for the first time in a week so may finally be on the mend. DD had it for a week, and DH had it for six days. I've done nothing for Christmas; and still can't get out of the house. Arrrgggh!

I hope you're not coming down with it as it's truly awful. Put Vit C and Echinacea on your shopping list smile

he is 3.9 ... I have tried everything to persuade him to drink but to no avail! He isnt too bad when he is lying on the sofa watching tv ... his temperature just peaks from time to time. To be fair he is being good ... no whingeing except at night time when he wants to sleep in with us ... nightmare!

How old is your ds?

When mine were younger I used to leave cups or bottles of water and juice around the living room in the hope they would help themselves (it worked sometimes!)

My ds is nearly 5 and he gets very cross when he's ill and reverts to toddler days (just like dh really wink)

Oh well I don't know. About 2 weeks ago had awful throat and temp, very nasty for about 3 days. This time, ds started with bad coughing all night tuesday, was fine weds so went and did nativity, then really poorly weds night, coughing and temp all night, muttering etc. and headache.
Weds v pale, temp all night again
Thurs less ill but was sick from catarrh
Fri still not right, same sat and today - he has a really deep cough, but is active again at least.
I started with bad cough and temp yesterday, yukky today, but taking loads of paracetamol etc to suppress cough.
I have no idea how long in other words...
DD got it 14 days ago and although she is on the mend she still runs high fevers every night and is not eating.

I had it badly for about 3 days and then it turned into a normal cold and cough.

DS2 has had it for 2 weeks now. I am hoping he can go to school tomorrow as he seems better but still has not stopped coughing.

I had the stabby earache sore throat thing that lasted about 4 days.

DS1 has his second cold in three weeks and so far DH has escaped it.

At the DSes school more than half the children are off and on the bus last week when there should have been 50 children there were 5!

Myrrhcy ... I am struggling to get ds to even drink let alone eat. That said he did just eat a jelly which I figure is mostly water or fruit juice anyway!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 16:36:33
Ds has been lying down or asleep most of today (in between crying) I can't get him to eat anything.

No, the GP couldn't give me anything as it's 'just' a virus. And I am 39 weeks pregnant so can't even take the usual cold remedies. Have to say, this is the rubbishest virus I've had in a long time. DH had it for a week and DS came down with it yesterday - don't visit us whatever you do!
Yeah, he was coughing a bit on Tuesday morning. Got sent home from school. I kept him off on Wednesday. Thursday he was still coughing, but wanted to go in, so I let him. Then he got sent home. Again. blush

Friday he went in for the Xmas party, and was ok. Yesterday we didn't leave the house, nor today. He's on the mend, I think.

I started getting it late on Thursday. Today I left the house on purpose, and I've done some cooking. I don't feel anything near 100%, but I feel somewhat functional. No way will I be biking or running tomorrow, but maybe Tuesday.
Dd1 had it for 3 days, dd2 had it for 3 weeks and i had it for 2 weeks.

this gets worse I was hoping people would come on and say they were fine after 24-48 hours ... so your ds had it for about 6 days notquitecockney?
Oh god, no, I can't do 10-14 days. We have chest/throat/nose/temperature.

DS2 came down with it on Tuesday, he seems ok today. I came down with it on Thursday night, I'm feeling ok today, but not great. Hoping to be up for leaving the house etc tomorrow.

oh no ... 10-14 days ... that is a tad too close to christmas for my liking! did your gp give you anything for it TPL or do you just have to get on with it? Me too flouncer ... ds is watching ice age and I am under the duvet on mumsnet and checking how my things are selling on ebay!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 15:12:19
I think I am fine until I try and do something, everyone is out so I am on the laptop under a duvet watching rear window
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 15:11:55
The chest/throat/nose/temperature one lasts 10-14 days according to my GP (currently day 7 here and miserable as sin)sad

I felt tired from wednesday, thursday night had sore throat, yesterday awful cough, headaches and sire throat and a fever. Today I have a bad head and cough and feel fine until I go to do anything.

Simply cannot have any time off work God knows how I am going to teach over excited kids all week.

am I right in saying that chocolate is good for coughs? wink
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 14:35:36
so I can pretty much wipe out the whole of this week then by the sounds of it. I am sure I must be imagining my symptoms now ... have a sore throat and cough. Feel like going to bed for an hour or two but dp out until 8pm ish and ds is likely to wake up any minute now! not at all Myrrhcy!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 14:25:08
bodiddly that sounds like the one that ends up with a long lasting cough poor you and ds.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 14:23:08
Sorry, that made me sound really uncaring, poor ds wink

Hope you don't succumb bodiddly

oh god don't say that ... I am so busy at work. Dp works for himself so we can't afford for him to be off for long. Thank god I have done the presents and wrapping. Fingers crossed he will recover in super quick time and mine disappears by morning!

Dh and ds have got the chest infection one; dh has had it for a week and is still not better, ds started with a simple cold but then got chesty and has been ill for 3 or 4 days and seems to be getting worse if anything.

I'm completely behind with all the Christmas preparations as a result.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 14:18:51
so far headache, cough and really runny nose/cold one with 103 degree temperature and general bleurgh feeling.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 14:16:27
Which one is it - the pukey one, the stabby earache/throat one or the chest infection that seemed to have attacked half the congregation including the priest this morning?
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 14:16:19
Ds was off school with it for a whole week.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 14-Dec-08 14:13:22
Ds is on day 2 and I am just starting to feel rubbish. I am assuming he is off nursery for a day or two or is it likely to be longer? This would come at the busiest time of year ... grrrrr! Poor mite looks awful though.
