Went to nurse today - had recieved a few calls asking me to come for a youth health check up (Im 23) So I made an appointment, was told on phone it was for height, weight and bp. I have a few problems re past eating disorders and a legacy of that so thought perhaps a wee chat about weight might be useful.

So went along today and nurse did bp, then said right so I will give you your MMR now. Asked what she was talking about! She seemed to think I would know that I needed one. She was all up for giving me it there and then, but I refused. I explained I wanted to read up - I didn't know we got another one. Plus I was about to go to work after and I ALWAYS faint after needles so not a good time.

None of my friends the same age knew either, so are we all living in a bubble?

Never heard of it.
You can easily have a blood test to check your immunity status if you want.

Chances are, given your age, that you have only had 1 MMR, all people under 25 should have had 2 since MMR started being used in the normal scedule thats why you were offered it. There is a catch up programme at the moment but that inly goes up to 18 yr olds so there is a gap of people age 19-25 who are not fully immunised.

I had MMR after the birth of 1st child. Apparently I wasn't immune. I was 38!

And my love its a big CASH COW for them ££££££££££££ lots of lovely lolly per jab. come on do you really think you need the MMR at 25. Oh wait for it someone I knows grannys, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousin of a blue whale got measles at 55.

Also Did they warn you that YOU MUST NOT GET PREGNANT WITHIN ONE MONTH of the MMR because your baby could be deformed if you get rubella from the Jab (live virus). Ask to see the package insert like you get in your other drugs for the possible side effects.

So glad I didnt get it, she was really pushing for it. Am trying to google to see if I really should have it, or if its not really necessary.

Does this mean Im not immune to rubella then, am confused.

Surely they should send you a letter, not get you along for an appointment for "weight and bp" and announce your getting it today.

beeper - there is no known risk of congenital rubella syndrome from the mmr vaccine.

Women are being offered free vaccination for a disease which used to cause deafness and blindness in hundreds of babies per year, not to mention the termination of literally thousands of pregnancies. Rubella is a disease which can be eliminated, as it already has been in some countries. You're telling us this is a bad thing? Giraffescantdancethetango doesn't 'need' vaccination, but what about her unborn children and those of the women she comes into contact with?

Singlewhite - I have downloaded a copy of the Merck MMRII-provax inset sheet. and it says that transmission of rubella from a vaxed nursing mother to a baby via breast milk is known. It also states that the rubella virus is capible of being shed via the nose of those that are vaxed.

Giraffes should get a blood test like you do every time you get pregnant, and see if she is immune. I am immune to rubella but then I had the disease and am fully immune and not just patched up with a fading immunity that requires topping up all the time.

Vaccines are a serious business and each one should be evaluated by the patient, people need to get through the hysteria and make informed decisions for themselves.

And of course its tragic about babies who are born with disabilties. And also those that are aborted. But lets face it most babies are aborted because they are not wanted and are perfectly healthy.

That's the product info sheet for pro quad, the varicella containing vaccine, one thats not used in this country.

This mmr is also with chicken pox. I just suggest you read it. whilst it says there are no known cases of transmission during pregnancy, it also states that there is also no reason why it could not happen.

On page two you will see that 'women are advised NOT to become pregnant with 3 months of having the vaccine'

DH had one.

he had measles as a child, but never had mumps or rubella.

i've seen adults get mumps, and it's NOT nice.

I am not saying 'dont' I am saying be aware when a GP advises a 25 year old female to have a MMR without even asking if she could be pregnant or is planning to get pregnant. Thats the material point here.

we'll see a lot more adults get mumps like we did three years ago as the vaccine immunity wears off

shame they don't get it as children when the complications are fewer

even more of a shame for girls as mumps is known to protect from ovarian cancer

i worked in a university and every spring we had students with mumps.

lots of secondary infections, too.

it didn't used to happen though
mumps was a childhood infection usually 5-9 years
it's now moved to a much more dangerous age 15-25 years
and not by magic
