How do we get rid of this annoying cold

Can anyone out there give some tips or advice on how we can all get rid of this horrible cold, this is the third time it has reappeared in all four of us in the last 2 1/2 months, we are all getting fed up now. It seem to affect dd1 the worst as it goes straight to her chest, (we have just brought her downstairs as she was sick with coughing AGAIN), no matter what we do we can't get rid, we are all ok for a few days then it starts up again with a vengeance, i'm starting to feel really run down with it now so what with my PND i'm feeling very very rough.

Any advice, tips or cold remedies would be a great help

Zinc supplements are supposed to be proven to shorten the lifetime of colds; I guess you'd take 1xthe RDA up to 6x daily. You could do a web search. It seems to help us get over colds faster.

Hi there,

I am not a doctor, but I think vitamin C can help to combat the cold, as it is supposed to build up your defence. Otherwise, if it can be of any comfort at all, lots of toddlers are sick these days, but it is part of being their age I suppose. take care !

Also, garlic & echinacea are supposed to help. You can usually get these 'alternative' remendies in supermarkets these days - you don't have to get to a health food shop. I got some in Tesco's for my dh who's also been suffering for the last couple of weeks. He's only been taking them a day, so I can't give any progress report as yet!

I can definately recommend echinacea drops and vitamin C tablets. The same as you, we have all suffered with reaccuring colds over the last couple of months...my 18 month old has also coughed and coughed. At the end of my tether I bought lots of vitamin supplements and echinacea. Within days we were all significantly better and I honestly believe these helped. Touch wood the cold hasn't come back this time.......Also wet towels in my daughters bedroom helped with the coughing as did a big bowel of water with karvol drops in. Good luck and chin up...summer is on its way!!!

I'm a great fan of some stuff called Sambucol which you get in health food shops. It's elderberry extract, tastes like ribena! It's not very cheap, but it seems to kick into place anything that's a bit "virus-y". I had shingles twice, and the second time, this Sambucol was brilliant.
If you suspect it could be a virus, it might be worth a try. The lady who writes the alternative helth section in the Sunday Times often recommends it. Not sure of doses for little ones, but it won't do them much harm.

Chiccadum - there is three of us and we have been going in the same circle for months now, its just getting silly. We have recently started taking taking a multi vitamin and echinacea. The good news is the colds are getting shorter and lighter. I guess it will taking a while to go completely as we are all run down.

fms - do Holland and Barrat sell Sambucol do you know? I had a chat with them and they did not mention that, only echinacea.
