Reflux

Have convinced myself that 7 week old baby has reflux. He's 4th baby and never experienced anything like this before although had nightmares trying to get my 3rd (also a boy) to take much milk - which i've since read may be a sign of reflux. He either spits up milk or clear fluid up to 2 1/2 hrs after feeding although usually just a small amount but sometimes there seems loads and sometimes it is hard to settle him after feeding as he seems very windy but doesn't seem keen to burp. He's putting on weight ok has put on 3 1/2lbs since birth. Mentioned to my HV and GP at 6 week check and they just seemed to think he's one of them babies. I'm happy with his weight but find i'm always on edge wondering if he's about to be sick and then choke! He's sleeping through the night from about 10.30 - 6.30 but i'm always tired because i'm so on edge!Does anyone with these experiences think it's worth asking GP for something like infant gavison or shall i just leave it and hopefully he'll grow out of it? He also seems to have permanent hiccups which i'm wondering if connected?

I had a similar problem with DD1 and found I was always on edge as it was so unpredictable when she would bring back her milk and food. So can emphasise with you. IME the GP and HV weren't that helpful even when she was dropping on the centile charts with her growth. I am convinced they thought I was just being a fussy first time mummy and it was a bit of posseting!

They did refer to pedeatrician but even then they were more interested in testing her for all sorts of things and I felt like they weren't listening to me! She eventually grew out of it when she started to walk at 13 months.

However, you may have an easier time getting yourself heard as you already have kids. Good luck. I know how demoralising it is. Going out with at least 4 spare outfits for baby and yourself it no fun.

Please plese please be in touch with a homeopath or naturaopth asap - this can be sorted out really quickly when this young - I have had amazing success with tons of babies with reflux - it will help them long term too in terms of immune system/digestion etc - I have an ad on the mumsnet noticeboard with my e-mail I can probably find someone really good near you. Hiccups are definitely a sign.....

can't find your ad but if you could recommend someone in Leicestershire that would be great. In the last couple of days when he gets hungry whereas before he would wimper and gradually build up to a full blown cry, he suddenly starts screaming which i'm guessing is due to the reflux(?) hurting when he's hungry.

thanks

is it not???

he it's alot and rather quickly when i compare him to other babies. but in between feeds he brings up milk and food.
well, i don't even count anymore how often we change clothes

i started looking for some homeopaths but hard to find. any in the reading area? (berkshire)
or at least some shops where i can buy globili?

jellyhead, whilst I agree with a lot of what you have said in dd's case she was not really very sicky until 3/4 months but was diagnosed with reflux nevertheless. She did need to sleep upright, had slow weight gain and got an ear infection at 8 weeks because of the constant milk regurgitation. However, she also slept through from 8 weeks but had been a difficult to settle baby until then. As her milk intake increased so did the amount of vomitting ! When she had ebm or formula at 6 months we used Thick n Easy to help her keep it down. Even so she just seemed to have a predisposition to vomitting at the least provocation, still evident at 3.

Mine had reflux at 6 weeks until 4 months - I also found doc and HV not very helpful (didn't seem to know much about reflux even) but I trusted my instincts (I knew something wasn't right - he'd throw up after nearly every feed and scream in pain drawing his legs up for sometimes up to 2 hours after throwing up) I was exhausted and worried so took him to Children's A&E at the local hospital - they were the first person to take it seriously and not look at me as if I was mad and prescribed Gaviscon - a real sanity saver! You can also get thick formula (SMA do one)which has a similar effect of keeping the milk down.
I always say trust your gut feeling on these things and get it checked if you are worried.

Kath - one thing that might help is to start putting your baby on his tummy for short periods of time, if you are not already doing so. if he is a bit of a sicky baby, then strengthening his tummy muscles should help him keep little bits of excess food down rather than him sicking them up.
