Hand and Mouth Disease

My 19mth old dd has picked up hand and mouth disease from a creche or play barn last week. I contacted all the mums/babies she has been in contact with and they have said their babies are showing no symptoms. It started on Friday with spots on her hand, I thought it might of been an allergic reaction to touching a plant etc. So i gave her a dose of piriton, this did not help. The spots did not seem to bother her, she didnt even notice them. On Saturday evening, we noticed she had them on her feet, bottom and knees. But she was fine in herself, eating, drinking, normal poos etc. Last night I called NHS direct, after talking to the nurse she said it sounds like she most definitely has hand and mouth disease, just the name shocked me. She said it's badly named and has nothing to do with the animals disease or animals. That it is passed through children, red spots appear on hands, bottom and feet - can look warty, lasts between 7 - 10 days and children can have them with no other symptoms like fever etc.

Has anyone else experienced this? How long did your child have it. I have not heard about this before and wonder how she picked it up.

I will have to think up lots of activities this week as I cant take her near other chidren as I was told its highly contagious so that means no library story sessions, no playground, no playgroup, no seeing friends etc... oh dear lets hope its not too rainy this week

Hand, foot and mouth

very very common, fairly mild .. over and done in a few days

it is highly contagious and you must inform the nursery

Oh... it's no big deal.... a bit unpleasant and I would not worry about giving it to other kids.... that's not a dangerous illness.... she obviously got it from someone else too anyway.
DS had it - lasted a few days.... he had many mouth ulcers which made it painful to eat things like tomatoes (acidic) but really not a big deal....
Sounds much worse than it is - lots of TLC for her !

Although not harmful to children, it can be deadly for pregnant women and unborn child, so ensure you stay well away from anyone pg.

Friend of a friend lost her baby at 32 weeks when she came into contact with it.

fran1 - are you sure? your poor friend, that is so awful, i just cant imagine the pain she must of felt...

nhs direct said that it is not harmful, my friend is 12 weeks pregnant but the last time i saw her was two weeks ago and dd first signs were friday.

i asked the nurse at nhs direct if it was dangerous to an unborn child, just incase i was pregnant and she said no but to tell my gp anyway.

she also said i dont need to see the go but could shoe the pharmacy if i wanted a second opinion because they see rashes all the time.

i think ill show her gp the rash anyway.

Three of my children had hand foot and mouth when I was pregnant with my fourth and I was told by my GP that it was not dangerous. I looked into it for reassurance and could not find any research that suggests it is harmful.

My two had this disease and were off for about 2 weeks. Took them to the GP and she told me their faeces were contagious for 4 weeks. Just wanted to let you know this. I have read other threads where the parents have caught it from the children and have had the most horrendous sore throat.

my dd has molluscum- she's had it since about july- it started off as a cluster of little spots on her arm and she's now covered in them. the dermatologist says that there's bugger all that you can do and that they'll clear of their own accord in a few months. The only good thing is that once you've had it you won't get it again. It's very common in kids apparently so at least she's getting it out of the way early IYKWIM

pixiefish - thats a good way at looking at it, are other mums funny about your dd getting too close to their children?

my dd has had one big raised spot on her arm for the last three weeks, i'll show the doc in the morning anyway.

Some are- it's contagious but I think you actually have to touch the lumps and have constant contact with them- I've not caught it and I bathe with her every day.

One mum really hurt me by lifting her ds up off the floor when dd went near him- I just said to her- do you honestly think i'd bring her to the bfing group if she had something that would hurt other kids- also made a comment about getting it out of the way early...

but she may have the hand foot and mouth thing.
TBH I regret mentioning the molluscum at the bfing group as she has no visible ones and without touching them the other kids would be ok.
She doesn't know about it and TBH am glad in a way that she's had them now so that other kids won't be cruel to her at school
