My best friends baby has just gone into hospital with a urinary infection

Any one know any more info on this type of infection, her d is only over a week old and she is frantic with worry and I really want to help but odnt even know where to start!!

I think they will probably treat it with antibiotics. Probably will clear up fairly quickly - the hospital is probably a precaution because the baby is so young.

Agree with Throckenholt on both counts - antibiotics normally treat UTIs within hours (although the full course must be completed) and a week is young and unlucky to get a UTI, so my hunch is they are checking the baby thoroughly all over. Good luck to them Sana, hope it is quickly resolved. It must be a huge worry.

Your poor friend and her baby. I think the problem with a baby so young is that you can't just use over the counter painkillers on them so the dosage of that, antibiotics and fluid intake needs careful monitoring. dd got one at 3.5 months and became quite ill very quickly so can't imagine how awful it would be in a newborn. The antibiotics did the trick really quickly though.

The dr subsequently did scans of her bladder and kidneys to check for any reflux which could cause damage if left untreated so perhaps they will do this with your friend's baby.
