my nose.....

DH elbowed me in the nose last night - with some right force as well. It hurt like hell and this morning, feels like - well, it feels like I have been elbowed in the nose! Its puffy and my cheekbones hurt too and my eyes feel sore (might just be cos I cried for ages!) too.

If my nose was broken, would it be really obvious - it hurts when I wiggle it, though not excrutiatingly, but I'm not sufficiently au fait on how my nose normally responds when I wiggle it, to tell if its broken!

And please don't tell me to get it xrayed just in case (which is what I would tell anyone who asked me about this!) I can't face a trip to A and E!

It sounds like it may well be fractured, of course it could just be badly bruised (which can hurt more than a break). GO TO A&E !!!

P.S. Is everything ok ? I'm assuming it was an accident, but if I'm wrong.....

I think the only way to tell would be via an x-ray - sorry! Although I don't think they can do anything even if it is, they would wait for swelling to go down and see what it looked like. I had a nasty skiing accident and landed right on my nose, my cheekbones and forehead swelled up and had two black eyes but it wasn't broken - i think they are quite resilient really.

All healed up really quickly though - have lots of wine tonight and you'll feel better!

I have broken my nose (well completely smashed it - someone dived into my face in a pool) and believe me, the pain was so bad I was in agony. I would rather go through 10 more labours than break my nose again - I couldn't sleep properly for 2 weeks.

Have you got a walk-in clinic or a local hospital? We have a place nearby and it does X-rays - you'd be suprised how many little local drop-in places can X-ray. Otherwise, if you can bear it, you could see the GP on Monday. It might be worth getting it seen to - there isn't much they can do. They tried manipulating mine into place (more agony) and then 6 months later when they realised it still wasn't straight, I had to have it rebroken in an op and reset (still more agony) so it may be worth getting it seen to sooner rather than later.

Mine was fairly obvious and the doctor did tell me that it requires some force to break it because it's quite a short, stumpy bone!

Yes NdP - an accident! I was getting into bed, everso quietly so as not to wake DH, he felt a movement on the bed and sat up pdq - smack! Nevertheless, I am making the most of his guilt . If it hadn't been an accident, the title of this thread would be "Ripped off DH's balls and now there is blood on my carpet - how do I get it out?"

From what you are all saying, I don't think it can be broken, it does hurt but its certainly not as painful as your experiences sound. I am getting on with some work and I did manage to make it to the hairdressers and tootsie salon this morning - plus there is no bruising. I think I might give it a few days and if it still hurts, have a rethink.
