ds1 and ds2 have a urine reflux problem due to a dilated left kidney..ds1 who is nearly 5 has grown out of it..wheras ds2 is only 8 weeks and my consultant has prescribed trimethoprim 0.5ml and reckons he;ll b on that for 3 years!!

i didn't question it at the time, but will that cause any long term side affects?

with ds1 we only gave trimethoprim when he had uti, shud antibiotics b given to a small infant to prevent infection? won't this affect his immune system in any way?

My dd has been on trimethoprim for repeated UTIs. Although she didn't have to go on it long term, a friend of ours did and she seemed completely fine.

I think the dose is really low. As your ds has kidney problem I imagine they do it to avoid any damage to the kidneys which can affect their long term health. I know that now, even if I have the slightest inkling that dd is getting a UTI, they shove her straight back onto the trimethoprim before her urine results have come back just because they want to avoid any kidney problems.

So I'm guessing the benefits outweigh the downside. But if I was you, I'd give the GP a ring just to put your mind at ease!
