I know its been "done" quite a few times. My experience is that about a fortnight ago I started with a bout of cystitis. Saw the GP and prescribed Nitrofurantoin. When I picked up the prescription I thought I remembered when I last had it, it made me feel a bit sick. I did keep them though. I got the prescription but was changed to Trimepothrim two twice a day for three days. Thought it had done the trick but the cystitis came back with a vengeance. Sample has been sent off and I was given a 7 day course of Trimethoprim. I'm on day 6 and its still there, not as bad but certainly not gone, really uncomfortable and I'm up going to the loo about five or six times at night. I'm so desperate to feel well again. Do you think I would do myself any harm just forgetting the last day of the Trimethoprim and using the Nitrofurantonin. Its impossible to get an appointment with the doctor for about a week. Maybe if there are any pharmacists/docs around they could give me some advice.

If the sample has been sent off to the lab then you would have been given the correct antibiotics for what showed up in the bacteria (if an infection was present) so the Trimathoprim should have worked.

Having said that I had an infection that didn't respond to antibiotics back in the summer for two months. It eventually went on its own after two lots of trimethoprim and one lot of nitrofuriton (or whatever it's called ).
