Have had it since Mon night.GP unable to fit me in until tommorow,so went to see emergency gp last night and started taking abs.Am also taking ibuprofen 400mg every 6 hours and co-codamol 8/500 every 6 hours therefore popping analgesics every 3 hours.Trouble is I am still in bloody agony.Had to put the dcs in nursery today as I was feeling that poorly (£60!!!).Now mn I am not a wimp(had both dcs with no pain relief) but this ear infection has me reduced to a snivelling wreck.Am having weird shooting pains and popping in the ears as I type and cannot sleep due to pain.Anyone out there got any non analgesic(have nothing stronger available) remedies that can help?Would be highly grateful.TIA,Wrinkly.

I've suffered terribly from debilitating ear infections in the past. The best thing I have found (granny's old time remedy) and its so soothing is put a few drops of olive oil in your ear get a cotton ball and plug up your ear. The oil not only soothes the ear canal due to the inflamation but it softens any debris such as wax and dead skin allowing it to come out. U dont need to put too much in or pack the cotton ball in your ear.

I had a recurring ear infection 18 months ago, and I was warned NOT to put olive oil, cotton wool, or indeed anything in there - it could make things much worse. You need a referral to an ear, nose and throat unit. They will suck out the debris once the swelling is under control. It's the only safe way of getting the stuff out - DON'T do it yourself - a woman in the hospital when I went had punctured her ear-drum with a diy attempt... If you're not responding to antibiotics, you need them to check if it's a fungal infection (one can develop from the other).

well obviously if you had a severe ear infection that requires you to be in hospital well yes you would need an ear nose and throat surgeon and I wouldn't recommend putting anything bigger than your elbow in it. But in my case when the antibiotics and ear flushings didn't work leaving my ear more inflamed. Nana reminded me of what she used to do to us as kids which was a drop of olive oil and cotton wool and it did the trick. Suffice to say my dr was very sceptical. Works for us.

I do have some over the counter stuff main ingredient is glycerine to soften debris and soothe the ear canal...same principal one cost $14 and the other from the kitchen lol

While your waiting to see your dr grab the good old hot water bottle.

Hope you get better soon
