healing time for a broken bone

Sorry to ask such a basic question...

I've broken a bone in my right foot - the 5th metatarsal, as in the jpg. I was told 4 - 6 weeks healing time. It's been 3 weeks now. I've switched from wearing a (removable) cast to a tensor bandage, and I have no pain at all. I'm walking with a limp, but I think that's because of the cast.

So, how do I know the bone is healing/has healed? Is pain a reliable guide, or am I supposed to get the foot x-rayed again. My family doctor is somewhat hard to get hold of.
