I fell down the stairs while holding DD (aged 2). She was fine as I held on to her tightly and she didn't hit anything. However I hit the skirting board with my head, shoulder, elbow, knee and big toe(?!)I got up and just got on with reassuring her and being normal but now I'm in work and I feel really shakey - combination of shock at how we could both have been hurt badly and how much I've knocked myself about.

Oh Welshmum! What a firght you must've got!

I fell over a coffee table in the Emergency Docs waiting areas whilst hold DS. He was only 12mths onld at the time and I landed right on top of him. he was looking at me like I'd tried to kill! It was awful ..... and very painful!

Maybe you should go home and take it easy if poss.

I feel for you. I've fallen twice in the last month with ds2 and he's just six months. Each time I've taken the fall in an attempt not to drop him. But I have an over active thyroid which isn't under control so now I don't carry ds2 down stairs anymore because I have enough trouble carrying myself.

I always felt terrible afterwards and I still do now. I'd take it easy and take a look at your own injuries. Once the shock wears off you'll feel them.

Take care

I did that once when ds1 was only a few weeks old . Automatic reaction to protect your child, so I fell heavily backwards (and obviously couldn't put my arms out to protect myself). Really badly hurt my back and could hardly stand or sit upright for days. Ds1 was completely unscathed...

Very very scary though. hugs

scary. i was walkign walking over a small paltform at a house i was staying at, and it had been raining. dd2 was only about 3months old at the time. i slipped off the platform and fall to one side. somehow, i managed to fall so i landed on my side whilst still cradling dd2. my elbows were pretty bruised.

Thanks for your msgs. I took myself to A& E in the end as my knee was hurting alot. I've sprained the ligament so lots of packets of peas for me. I feel a bit better now but I was really shakey earlier on.....thanks again xxx

Welshmum, when my dd1 was about 2 we were walking down the stairs when I slipped and let go of her hand - as a result she 'cartwheeled' down the steps (about 8 of them). She was completely unhurt but I was an emotional wreck for about a week afterwards.

It's not what actually happens that is upsetting - it's mor the thought of what could have happened - I had flashbacks for ages, even though dd1 forgot about it within 2 mins.

Don't worry about feeling shaky - it just shows how much you care! But do take it easy - it's far more of a shock to the system than if you had just fallen down the stairs by yourself.

Poor you . This has been my worst fear (well, the worst realistic one) since having ds. As a result I always keep one hand free for the banister when going up or downstairs but have still managed to trip once or twice (regained balance though).
Hope you feel better soon ? and well done on managing to protect your dd so well.

Glad you're feeling better! It's horrible when these things happen, and I agree that it's often what might have been rather than what happens that shakes you up. Last summer when I was about 6 mths pg with DD, DS2(3) fell over in IKEA carpark. He was pretty upset so I picked him up and walked the rest of the way to the store. I had almost got there when I slipped on a banana skin (yes it does happen in RL!) and went flying. My horrible guilt is that I tried to protect DD over DS2, and because I let go of him, it was like I threw him 3 ft across the car park He ended up with a big graze on the side of his head.
