Lower abdominal pain

I appreciate that no one can diagnose me online but I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar symptoms as I'm at the end of my tether and actually getting a bit worried now...

About a month ago went to GP as I'd been having pains in lower abdomen, on the right hand side, for a few days and thought it was cystitis. There was no sign of infection but took antibiotics anyway, and a week later nothing was different. I had to have three days off work as pain was so horrid and I also felt sick.

This has carried on intermittently for 4 weeks now... some days are not too bad, but even on a 'good' day there is constant underlying pain and nausea. I had an abdominal ultrasound that showed nothing wrong. The pain almost feels like a tearing sensation, mixed with a sore feeling. It's always on my right hand side, between the lower right of my belly button and my groin.

It's not really felt sore on pressing before, but today it feels bruised when I press on it. I feel worse when I move and better when I'm lying down. I also still have more generalised cystitis-type pains on and off, like a sore achey feeling all over the groin area.

I have no idea what this is and my GP doesn't either... they were very nice but said that they didn't know what was wrong and to go back in a month if there was no improvement. I don't know if I can take another month of it

Does anyone know what this might be?

Have you ever had abdo surgery? could it be adhesions? Have they ruled gynae things out with the scan?

I've never had abdominal surgery (well, only on my left kidney, but that's the wrong place) so I don't think it would be adhesions unless you can get them some other way. The ultrasound came back completely normal, although it was an external one and the GP said ideally she'd have liked a transvaginal one done to get a better picture. Perhaps they have missed something by not doing a transvaginal scan? I just don't know!

If they were concerned enough to send you for a scan I'm sure they would have seen everything they need to see abdominally or they would have done a TV scan so try not to worry. I was admitted to hospital with similar pain (which turned out to be something so random that it won't be the same for you) apparently undiagnosed pain in that region is quite common.

Go back to your GP and see what he or she suggest

Could it be pelvic congestion syndrome? This type of pain is better when lying down and worse when sitting or standing. It can also cause painful urination. I know you had a normal scan but I would push for a transvaginal scan for completness. Hope you get some answers.

This is interesting because I have the exact same thing. Lower abdominal/pelvic pain to the right hand side which can be really sharp.

I have a bulge too but when I had an ultrasound, they just said my womb is too far forward.

I have had a fair bit of abdominal surgery so this may make me go and get a second opinion.

I have been having similar pains - but mine feel more linked to the bladder so I am seeing a urologist. My ursine samples came back clear of infection but my pain is also better when sitting and lying down. Very interesting.

Sorry have only just seen the most recent messages. I'm still none the wiser as to what might be causing the pain, have been checked for pelvic inflammatory disease and that has been ruled out. I have another appointment with GP next week so I will mention pelvic congestion syndrome, I am wondering if it might be that.

It is very interesting to hear that there are a few of us with similar pains but no diagnosis... seems it's tricky to get to the bottom of abdominal pain if it's a bit out of the ordinary.

All abdominal pain can be 'referred' pain - meaning that it can seem quite localised but be coming from somewhere completely different. Has your GP excluded the possibility of grumbling appendix?
