A couple of nights ago I put dd1 - age 7 - up to bed and she was fine. About half an hour earlier she was up for the toilet and complaing of diarrhoea. She went back to bed but couldn't settle as she was getting really serious pains in her stomach. She got up a couple more times again with really awful diarrhoea.
She continued to get really bad cramping pains in her tummy for a good 2-3 hours. I was about to phone NHS Direct to get some advice when I remembered that earlier that day she had been eating sugar free mints. I remember reading on a label for some sugar free sweets once that sometimes they can cause a laxative effect.
{blush]
Looks like that was the problem.
A few hours later she was right as rain and no problems since.
I will never be allowing her those again.

They probably substituted sorbitol for sugar. Yes they do have a laxative effect (I remember when I scoffed a packet, as a child). The packet usually states the maximum number that should be consumed in a day.

Definately sounds like the sorbitol. My dad used to get diabetic sweets, and my brothers and i were never allowed to touch them because
A) we would have eaten the whole pack
B) We would have got diahorrea

On the very rare occasions I have had a diet coke in a bar I have had terrible stomach pains.
Sugar free is much worse than full of sugar IMO
