My 3 year old has got chronic constipation - I gave him syrup of figs which made him go but it still hurt when he went. Went to docs who has put him on some sachets to mix in water - it is a laxative for chronic constipation. Been 2 days now and hasnt been and he keeps complaining it hurts. Going to ring docs this morning (can talk to them at 11.30) but any advice? Its breaking my heart seeing him in pain.

I'd get some enemas for little children from the chemist. That'll make it into mush and it'll come out without hurting him. Then till his system is working properly again, I'd give him a bit of linseed everyday (reform shop), sprinkle a teaspoonful on yoghurt or if he'll just eat it as is (mine does) fine. Follow it up with a cup of tea and that should work fast.

I suppose you're avoiding everything that constipates: bananas, carrots, milk, cocoa, chocolate spring to mind.

Good luck with it. We had this too (still do to some extent - dd is now 6). It's awful I know

My DD is the same, she can do for a week without going at all then it gets 'stuck' and she tries for days to push it out until she crying everytime she sits on the loo. She rocks backwards and forwards on the loo as this helps move it along. I tried Califig but this just gave her chronic diorrhoea (sp?). I just make sure she drinks LOADS of water, not squash, milk, juice etc.... and once a day give her pure undilated fruit juice. This seems to help but it has not gone away completely.
