What is best for itchy chicken pox spots?

I have looked in thread archives, and a couple of people mention Benadryl and Piriton - are they good? I used calamine and eurax when I had CP a few years ago, and they were pretty useless!
And is it the benadryl cream, rather than the tablets?

Benadryl is in syrup form. In the states you can get Caladryl (a combo Calamine and Benadryl soothing gel which worked wonders of my DS's). Not sure if you can get it in the UK though. Also be careful you cannot give medicine by mouth that has the same active ingredients as the cream.

When my dd has c/pox, I used calamine cream on the spots (far better than the lotion) and a small amount of piriton at night to prevent scratching in her sleep.

you can use it undiluted but I would do a test first as it is strong otherwise dilute with oil or put in eg cream

also i gave mine baths in bicarbonate of soda. didn't know how much to put in so put about 4 teaspoons. Also a coupel of drops of lavender oil. I tipped calamine down them and rubbed it all over the torso.

Oral antihistamine (piriton).

piriton is a life-saver with chickenpox, calamine lotion is soothing, immediate relief, calpol takes the edge of the 'unwell' feeling, but piriton really takes away the itch. you can get it in syrup form

you can get calamine mixed into aqueous cream, which is more soothing than straight calamine imo, and more fun for the child putting it on themselves.

I've been giving ds piriton and giving him oat baths cut the bottom of a pair of tights put oats in and tie it to the tap so the water goes through it as it runs it's very soothing.

Dermidex cream is soothing - think you can't use it for under 3's though.

Eurax was AMAZING when DD had chicken pox. Lasts up to 10 hours too.

Thanks so much everyone, I really appreciate the answers. Spots are appearing on my dd almost as I look at her - she's like something out of a cartoon, poor love. So I've got masses of bicarb for her bath (I'll give the oats a try, too), piriton syrup and some benadryl cream.
