Suddenly longer periods Aibu to be worried?

islandtiare · 09/07/2016 14:38

Am really freaking out here as have health anxiety anyway

Had the Copper coil put in last August and my periods did get slightly heavier and more painful as expected but were still only 5-7 days long

Last 3 months they've got really weird

In May I spotted for 3 days then had heavy bleed like normal for 4 days then another 3 days of spotting so about 10 days

I was in a bit of pain as well so I went to the family planning clinic as my gp was worried my coil had moved. But it looked fine and the dr there checked my cervix and that was ok

Then last month (June) was similar but about 7 or 8 days

Then This month had 4 days light spotting 3 days quite heavy, thought I'd finished yesterday then today I've got bright red bleeding again (but quite light) so I'm on day 8 and really worried

Sorry for tmi btw. Has anyone else had this? Just really worried in case something is wrong. I'm 37 btw so hopefully not anywhere near menopause

Help!!!

See I wouldn't be so worried if it had been like it from having the coil in. It's that it's changed that's worried me

I will make a gp appt on Monday, even if it stops. hope they don't think I'm making a fuss over nothing :/

I have a copper coil and periods are just like you've described. Some months though they can be very short.

My periods have changed after having copper coil in for a while too... I either get a week of spotting before period or a week of spotting dark blood mid cycle. Discharge has also increased. I'm having investigations but I just want the bloody thing out now after happily relying on coils for 18 years. This is my second one after pregnancy, the first deciding to move after 18 months.

Same here. Had it three years - ended up around 12 days bleed a month before I had it removed. Also ended up with anemia due to blood loss so watch out for symptoms! Tried Mirena next and hardly had any bleed but the hormone didnt agree with me. I find contraception way harder than it should be!

I know pseudo

It's a nightmare can't take any kind of the pill as lose my sex drive completely and also gain weight

Depo turns me into a nut case

Condoms are horrible

And I get pregnant if dh so much as looks at me so need to be so careful

I am thinking about getting it out and gettin sterilised but would rather dh get snip as I've been through enough. 7 pregnancies and 3 births (some were miscarriages) but he refuses Angry

Sorry to hear of your troubles and losses. I have just have tubal occulation on the nhs. And it went fine. Day surgery under general. 2 cuts - one inside the belly button and the other in yourbpubic hair line. First 4 days I felt rough and tired. Just took oc painkillers and slept when my children were at school. Even managed to do the school run the day after. It is a big scary decision esp as there is no realistic way back but it does feel like a weight is lifted.
Hope you get answers from GP

Thanks mrspear

Yeah I think I would consider that, as just cba with contraception, it doesn't sound too bad esp after 3 c sections! my mum had it done too and says it was ok

But I think dh should have the snip after everything I have been through!!

I am going to the walk in family planning clinic today to discuss my options, my "period" finally ended yesterday afternoon after tailing off sunday with just a bit off light brown discharge (sorry for tmi) almost ten days long its ridiculous, I am so worried :(

I went to the family planning clinic

and the doctor said they would not just remove my coil because of the longer periods, they need investigating so I have been booked in for an ultrasound and "pipelle" (which I think is some kind of biopsy thing) and swabs. she said it is probably down to my coil but they need to rule out "anything nasty"

I told her i had bad anxiety and she managed to fit me in for it a week tomorrow but I am so scared!!! what if something is seriously wrong, cant concentrate at work, am constantly tearful, I am going on holiday in a week, I am going to have a shit time waiting for results, I am not sure whether I will get any answers on the day or not, I would imagine not if they have to send the biopsy off somewhere

I have felt sick since then all the time and can't eat and am tearful all the time

so I am bumping in the hope that any posters have had similar and were ok

Are you saying that your normal period now lasts 7-8 days? This is completely normal. If it's heavier towards the end then yes, it might be worth them doing some investigations but usually they start with an ultrasound scan, not a biopsy. You don't HAVE to agree to a biopsy, so why not ask if they will give you a scan? It doesn't sound as if the dr you saw at family planning is on the ball tbh! I have had 2 biopsies (one pipelle and one with a hysteroscopy) but I'm post menopausal so that's totally different to your situation. In each case, my gynae started with a scan and was happy then when it occurred 3 times he said he wanted to do a biopsy.

The copper coil is renowned for giving heavier bleeding- it's why a lot of women won't have it.

I think you ought to go back to your GP , ask for a referral to a gynae and / or ask them to scan you first.
If you do have to have a biopsy it's dead easy- no worse than a smear, so don't worry.

Hi polly thanks for replying. Yeah last few months it has been like this :

May: 3 days spotting 4 days "normal" period 3 days v light brown spotting ...don't even need a pad by the end it's just when I wipe (sorry tmi)

June v similar but around 7 or 8 days in total

Then this month 3 days spotting 3 days "normal" period then 2 days v light brown spotting as before so around 8 or 9 days In total

I rang and spoke to the dr yesterday as was worrying so much. and she says she will be able to tell me on the day while scanning me what the scan suggests however will then have to wait around 2 weeks for the biopsy result to be sure

I'm going on holiday the day after the scan, it's gonna ruin my holiday worrying :(
