Purple mottled skin after a puncture wound

I stupidly jumped off the bed onto a radiator airer last night. It went right into my foot. The airer was cut off with bolt cutters by ambulance crew. In hospital they talked about getting the rest out under GA because the sock etc had gone inside but in the end a different, somewhat brutal doctor came, pulled it out (I was on morphine and gas and air), dressed it and sent me home. They said to speak to GP about tetanus shot and get it re dressed tomorrow.

Today I cannot stand (not putting weight on it, just standing or hopping on other foot) because my foot goes mottled purple and very weird and hot. It is tingly all the time but not too bad a colour (though feels cold) when it's slightly elevated.

I asked for GP advice and he will not even tell me if this is normal. He just said any problems, go back to A and E. I don't really want to just to be told I'm fussing over nothing and go home. I'm still in significant pain but was told ibruprofen would be fine. I'm also exhausted at the least effort - just going to the bathroom has me out of breath. But when I'm sat in bed I'm pretty much fine.

Into the bargain the GP said there are no nurse or GP appointments for weeks but I could try to phone as an emergency tomorrow to get it re -dressed. (Usually this takes days and days of phoning at 8am).

Does anyone know what I should expect after a puncture wound? Is it normal for my foot to be purple and mottled when I'm upright like this? We then phoned A and E for advice but they said speak to GP (who'd already said go to A and E if problems) or phone 111. I'm worried I'm making a fuss over nothing but no one told me what to expect and the tetanus thing is worrying me too.

I don't like the sound of that. Can you draw a line where the purple ends and check to see if the purple is advancing. If it is go back to A and E asap as it could develop into cellulitis, which is nasty.

Well it seemed to go up to my ankle. I'm fine with my leg elevated but every time I go to the bathroom now it goes purple and I am shaking and shivering by the time I get back into bed. I don't know how much of the shaking and shivering is just nerves and how much is something else.g

Go back to A&E if you can't get a gp appointment for tomorrow. You do NOT want sepsis.

A&E now, sounds like the circulation is being compromised.

Don't take any risks with this.

Get yourself off to A&E right away.

God love you though, it sounds horrible. Flowers

It seems a little better today and I feel a bit better which I think is positive. I managed to get a nurse appointment (it was meant to be re-dressed today anyway). She seemed to think the purple mottled thing would improve (of course, she had me up on the bed with foot up so it looked fine) and was just a consequence of having disrupted so many blood vessels. She said the wound looks lovely at the moment And to come back if anything gets worse or any worries. She gave me a tetanus jab too. So I'm happy for now.

Thank you for all your comments - it made me determined to see someone instead of getting in a state! I will keep a close eye.
