Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping I can get some reassurance or something?!

Basically I have had a call back for an irregular smear result. I am so so scared. My mum passed away from cancers when I was 15 and my biggest fear about having kids was always having to leave them because of being ill. I had an awful childhood after my mum passed away, really terrible. I know it may be all okay, but all I remember is every time my mum went for a smear everyone was so scared and anxious because she had already had it once and then one day that was it, she really was ill again and a year later she was dead.

I keep crying as my head is all over the place. I've been having some pain down below and I've had pains in one of my legs but out that down to my back problems.

Can anyone advise? Google is making me more anxious.

I don't want to leave my family already, my kids are only one and two :-(

Xxx

Didn't want t o pass you by but I'm sure you know that lots of women get called back and nothing is wrong. I understand why you feel so worried but hang on in there. Stop looking at Google. Hope all is well.

Yes lots of people get called back. When is your appointment for? Don't have experience myself but I know that sometimes it is because they didn't get enough cells to test the first time around. Other times there are cells they can see some tiny, tiny changes in (but it would literally take many years for them to turn into cancer - if at all). They can just zap these cells off and then hopefully you get a clear smear test for many years to come. If you change the title of your question to include Call back for Smear or something like that, you might get better replies. Sorry about your Mum, that must have been very difficult for you. I have twice been called back and the repeat smear has been fine it's just been a problem in the lab.

I got called back for some abnormal cells. Was very scary at the time but didn't need treatment, just had smears more frequently for a few years. Over 10 years ago now. All fine

Oh poor you, it's horrible feeling so worried.

But bring recalled for smear is very very very common. It's either because they didn't get a proper sample last time so have to repeat it. Or it may be as a pp said, they've picked up very very early changes in cells - again this is very common (and why we have smear tests Smile). I had this in my early 20s. The cells (very few of them) were cut out, and I never had an abnormal result again and many many years have passed since then

It's understandable you're worried after what happened with your mum, but this is really common.

Thank you everyone for your kind messages. After a long restless night heating so many of you relate and having gone through the same things has put my mind at ease a little so thank you very much. I guess it's just a waiting game now xx
