do I wake him to change his nappy dilemma!?

My Ds 2.7 has had an ongoing nappy rash problem. He has been diagnosed by dermatologist as having excema. I went to doctors today as hydrocortisone cream course is up and he's still showing signs of soreness but not as bad as in the past. Have been trying to work out what triggers this. His biodegradable nappies are not absorbent enough for night times so I have been putting a polyester outer from his cotton nappy set over his disposable nappy at night, think this is resulting in bad reaction to urine, I feel really stupid I've only just picked up on this but it could be a key factor. So have decided to buy a more absorbent nappy for night times, any suggestions, but for tonight I 'm wondering whether I should change his nappy before going to bed, it'll be very disruptive but may help stop a bad flare up although he's only been in it for two hours and will be in the fresh one for eight and a half, is it worth it!?

change it KJM otherwise it will keep you awake

I like huggies nappies which I think are also available in NZ. They don´t seem as plastic, but may vary from country to country.

My sister swears zinc cream is great for on the nappy area

As you are currently dealing with a sore bottom, I would change the nappy.

that's what I was thinking, I usually only use cotton wool and water on it but have got some alchohol, fragrance free wipes so may use those to do a really quick change. I haven't a clue how he's going to react to me doing this, ok here goes, thanks for the advice

you had better come tell us if he screamed of nappy robbers in the night

How about putting some camomile tincture in the water for when you change him - soothing - sage is good for fungal infections. Calendula is also good for healing

I was going to suggest Tesco pull-ups as my DD (3.3) is still in them and they are great for night time changes I can tear them to get them off and just pull them to get them on, she;s very good and sub-consciously hears me say 'bottoms up' so I can get them on her. However I doubt you have a Tesco, however still recommend a pull-up.

I use sudocreme for all rashes, I swear by it - can you get it where you are?? I recently had a couple of nasty abcess like spots and it healed them for me perfectly! And it;s nice on the DC's bums too!

what a good boy he hardly woke up and even helped a little.

good advice hinemoa, I was washing him with chamomile tea and using calendular cream. swabs came back not fungal. Then as it had been going on seven months decided to try doctors route and they wanted me to stop using all other things. I am about ready to take him to my homeopathist and go back to complimentory herbal aids as steriods don't seem to have 'cured' it although they have slowed it down. Is so ongoing we are all very tired with this. I shall try huggies I really suspect that dryer nights may help

yep tried zinc and caster oil cream for a while and sudocream as this used to work so well in an old folks home I worked in, but think his skin is now so sensitised anything other than emulsifying ointment caused a flare up

I would never wake a child to change a nanny unless you think they'll stay asleep. One of ours had bad nappy rash and the hydro. etc cream. She was in cloth nappies.

I think if it makes the difference between a flare-up of a sore bottom or helping the healing process, then I would definitely take the risk of waking the baby/toddler up with a nappy change. Well worth it imo.

Xenia the baby is question in in NZ, so its night time and had been asleep not that long.

KJM have used St Johns Wort and Calendula mixed together as a tincture as well as the camomile then diluted in water. Have read on here that oat baths are good. Can he run around without the nappy on outside ? In between cold fronts!! Will give his skin some breathing time.

try a reusaable nappy if the ecofriendliness thing is important to you. there's some fantasticly absorbant ones on the market for night time and you can use a fleece liner to keep the skin dry

actually I have some reuseable ones if you want I´ll bring them over????

thanks, I have a cotton bottom nappy system and he kept waking up wet as he is a really good drinker, so went on to use moltex at night. But H if you think yours will work I'll buy them off you. Incidently he was dry this morning after the 10 pm nappy change so as he didn't really seem to mind the interference maybe I shall do that again, but as we are going away for a fortnight don't want to risk waking him in an unfamiliar enviroment so shall use huggies whilst away or until you come to the rescue H

PinkT I shall look into a fleece liner too sounds very comfortable.

I was using St jonhns wart oil and doing the oats in a bag thing in his bath until the dermatologist got hold of us and got me to use oilatum+ only in bath and not to expose the area but I think the idea was to clear any infection which may have got in there, doctor reckons it looks clear now so am going to go back to natural remedies now and bott out time, potty training to follow shorltly I reckon and then it's fingers crossed

They are free to a good home They do need a waterproof pant over them - think they are Mothercare - will have to go hunting for them to check.

How about getting a bucket of good cold Kapiti ocean water and putting that in his bath... salt water is supposed to be good for the skin

I've been thinking about the nappy offer and thanks but I don't think I shall take them so don't worry about bringing them over.
It's interesting what you say about the sea water that's exactly what the nurse at Kenepuru reccomended except she said take him in the sea, I've manged that three times as the weather has been so cold but maybe I'll go down the the beach with a water bottle!

I'd also put all of his nappies through on a hot wash with no powder to strip any powder residue off them.

This helped when my dd had a bad nappy rash
