he hasnt been well since wednesday night..hardly ate wednesday day time. Not eaten at all since the night. He is drinking bare minimum to stop having to go to hospital as took him to be checked yesterday. He is only just meeting fluid intake requirement but its now saturday and he still has not eaten a thing. They said yesterday he had ketones in his urine as obviously his body is starting to pull resources from elsewhere so when do I worry? He was 3 in oct.

Hi Nemo,
Not sure I can be of any real help as I'm a grandma not a mum But didn't want to see your plea unanswered so here goes. My 3 ( in Sept) yr old grandson had a nasty gastroenteritis bug which started 2 weeks ago on the Sunday night. Vomited for 14 hrs, progressively getting more frequent. Went to see gp Mon morning who said he may need hospital admission if it didn't slow off by 4pm, which luckily it did. But very little liquid and no food all day Mon and Tues, then Wed vomited again 4/5 times so nothing then. Drank a little on Thurs but not enough and still no food. And so it was Fri when he first had something to eat. Sat was sick again Sun went to A&E as he was only weeing every 12 hrs and still not eating. They said he wasn't dehyrdrated but adsorbing any liquid into his system. Eventually on the Mon he started to improve and eat again, having lost a lot of weight
So basically over 8 days had no food at all for first 4, then very little for next 4 before he started to pick up.
Hope your ds improves very soon.

Do not worry so much about the food intake. It is more important to get fluids down him and to monitor his temperature and notice his general appearance. When my ds had horrid tummy bug, I was more worried about his 40 degrees temp and floppy demeanour. It was frightening but I kept in touch with dr by phone, and kept offering fluids. The first thing he could keep down was breastmilk - at under 2 he was much younger than your ds. He was ill for about 5 days before he started to pick up.

thanks ladies..he is taking the minimum water intake and wont eat. He threw up everywhere again before but it is the only time today and he did once yesterday. Still seems to be weeing and is generally ok, temp is up and down but comes down when given paracetamol/nurofen. Just typical to get it the week before christmas..lol

There is a sachet (packets) can get from pahramcy for dehydration...it contains salt and sugar / glucose to help..i cant remember the name but i used it on my DD at 12 months. it helped as she wouldn't eat for about a week.

Sorry cant remember the name....can you get to a 24 hour large Tescos or something? Or try a boots tomorrow.

diaralyte (don't know about the spelling)- that's what you ned t try and get down him.

Last year my 4 year old didn't eat from Weds lunchtime and ended up in hospital on the friday eve with a drip in to reydrate him and he ate toast on sat morning.

I would guess that as long as yours is drinking then you'll be OK but try the diaralyte stuff as it replenishes minerals, vitamins etc I think as well.

hi
already have some dioralyte from dd being ill last month. However DS is a nightmare to get to eat and drink at best of times and all he likes is milk or water so have no chance of the other or icepops..

oh bugger Nemo, sorry to hear DS is unwell. given the ketones issue, could you phone up anyone at the hospital or failing that NHS Direct about his eating, or maybe try and catch Spacecadet on the phone/MSN and ask her? Ordinarily I would say the same as previous posters - just to worry about the fluid, not the solid food, but I honestly don't know about the ketones issue. Hope he feels better soon.
