Stabbing pain in thigh, possible sports injury or something else?

I'm a active person ( well trying to get fitter ), go to the gym most days but recently introduced a workout DVD to my fitness routine (5 times a week), for the past 2 weeks I have been experiencing pain in my thigh which travels down my leg, it's a weird pain and at times it feels like someone is jabbing a hot needle into my thigh Sad, it seems to me much better when I am moving and I am still managing a hour at the gym each day plus my evening workout, when I go to sit down in the evenings or have a bath the pain gets quite bad and it keeps me awake during the night, when I wake up it has vanished again Hmm. It doesn't seem bad enough to warrant a trip to my gp but it's getting a bit annoying in the evenings.

Anyone else experienced anything similar.?

A pain that keeps you awake at night absolutely DOES warrant a trip to your GP.

Describing it as a hot needle suggest nerve pain rather than bone or muscle. Where in the thigh is the pain? Front, back, inner, outer? Localised to a small area or running the full length? Near the hip, the knee, or mid-thigh? Constant or intermittent?

As for your exercise routine - an hour in the gym most days, and an exercise DVD 5 times a week sounds like it could be excessive. Have you been doing this for a long time, or is this recent?

the pain is on my outer thigh, half way down, the pain has been travelling down my leg and causing a dull ache, today it's more in one place and I can put my finger on the spot where it hurts ( where the stabbing pain is ), I have had hip pain and back pain in the past but on the other side of my body.

I have been going to the gym for 6 months ( almost every day ), some days I do the gym, walk a couple miles and then do a workout in the evening, other days I do less but never go a day without doing any exercise. I am doing more at the gym and working slightly harder which may have caused it. It feels like a nerve or muscle, not bone. The pain is mainly in the evenings or late in the day, it's fine when I am at the gym which is why I havnt stopped exercising .

Hate to say this and hope it 's not but it sounds a lot like sciatica. Having had it, it's not nice. You need to see your GP in any case if you can't sleep for pain.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

I get a similar pain especially if walk or stand for any length of time. MY husband used to get it and I think our GP told him it was parathetica neuralgia (I think that's how it's spelt) which is a form of sciatica
