Ds sent to hospital with suspected pneumonia

Ds is usually very fit, runs most days, gym four or five times a week. At the weekend he came down with a virus so had high temperature, rigors, cough, sore throat. Expected him to shake it off but went to GP Monday as was feeling poorly and she prescribed antibiotics and ordered blood tests.
He went back today as still feeling awful and GP sent him to hospital. His blood shows an infection but the GP said that his white blood count is "wrong"
At the hospital he's had an xray which shows a slight infection, another blood test which "shows a problem" and is now being repeated again with more blood tests and he has to have a urine test and swabs taken.
Since Christmas he's been unusually tired but he works hard and thought that the break had thrown him off routine. I feel quite anxious,any thoughtson what might be wrong?

I wonder if he might have glandular fever or something like that.

I'm not a medic so I really don't know, but it's just an idea...maybe ask them to explain what they mean by 'wrong' and 'problem' if you can collar someone. Not easy I know xx

Glandular fever came to my mind too.

There are lots of different types of white blood cells and different types being elevated indicate different problems, so often they are looking at ratios rather than whether there is a general raise in one type (sorry im very rusty on my immunology so can't guess any further).

Not sure pneumonia would be at the top of my list though.

He's 26 so I'm at home. Should add he's had repeated nose bleeds since the weekend but thought that was the virus and he is heaving repeatedly and been sick daily. He's lost 12lb since the weekend. Still waiting for news as they are repeating bloods again! that's third time now since he got there.

When he was 17 DS3 had a phone call from the GP one evening to say his white cell count was out. Turned out he had glandular fever. They monitored his cell count for 6 months.
Hope they get to the bottom of your Son's illness and he makes a speedy recovery. I know how worrying it is for you.

Nosebleeds are not terribly unusual if someone has cold type symptoms.

I know I would be worried too. Any mum would be no matter what age our kids are. He is in the right place getting a very thorough check over by the sound of it. Hang on to that thought right now.

Glandular fever jumped to my mind too (Im not a medic just a mum). I have known several people hospitalised with it, with some odd and rather unpleasant symptoms.

It's only normal to worry but try not to.(easier said than done I know!)

Well been to see him and got more info. His bloods show a massive infection that they don't believe is the chest infection which from the xray isn't severe. His white count is low when they would expect it to be high in response to the infection. He's got breathing difficulties at present that they say isn't from his chest but because of his blood. They are querying septicaemia. I am really worried now but glad he's in the best place for now especially as he lives alone.

Don't google. There are loads of causes. Speak to the hospital.

No not googling, ds said they had said they are putting together a picture and should be able to tell him more later tonight or tomorrow morning.He's on the clinical decisions unit so there seems to be stuff happening all the time.

I hope he's okay, OP. I've a child that age and know that no matter how old they are, you always worry if they're not well.

Oh you poor thing and I really hope there is some good news today for you both.

I knew a lovely guy who had a blood infection when he was about 20, he was in hospital for a week or so and then back to normal - completely normal, running, work, you name it.

I'd never heard of it until then.

He's now been moved to a side room on a ward. He's having a massive nosebleed that they don't seem able to stop, pouring from his mouth and nose which is making his breathing worse Giving it a little longer before packing his nose he said. His temperature is down but they are talking about an endoscopy now so no idea what they are thinking seeing as the vomitting and not wantingfood seemed minor complications from thecough and sore throat.

you poor thing. my dd is the same age and I've been thinking about you all morning. its difficult being mum when they are older. You want answers but you don't want to worry them and rant at the dr. the dr will obviously talk directly to them and you feel so bloody helpless. hopefully results will be back soon and that will help with a treatment plan. my money is still on glandular fever and a quick google on your behalf suggests to me they are thinking along the same lines. glad you are on a side ward. i have spent many a long hour on the cdu with my mother and its a manic place to be.

Keep posting if it helps, we are all rooting for your ds. I too hope it isn't anything dodgy and just a freakish illness that buggers off as quickly as it turned up.

My heart goes out to you. How scary. My two boys are still little, but I know I will never stop worrying about them. Keeping fingers crossed that they've got to the bottom of it and working on making him better.
