Chloramphenicol Eye Oint, side effects...

Just got completely freaked by reading side effect leaflet with Chloramphenicol Eye Oint. DS (2) has gunky eye infection and we've just been prescribed it. Amongst the side effects it lists on "rare occasions.. childhood leukemia"!! We've called the doctor to see what they say, but I am v.anti giving it to him. I know it says it's rare, but seems mad to take the risk. Any thoughts anyone?? Or am I just being precious...

My dd has had it & dh has used it for at least 17 years (as long as I have been with him) as he has permanent sticky eyes if he doesn't use it.

He has seen at 3 doctors in that time, non have voiced a concern over it.

Oh my - apologies, I certainly didn't mean to freak anyone out who'd used it. Have just spoken to GP, who was lovely and understanding and said all drugs that you use on kids could have a side effect, but it's ridiculously rare and the benefits far outweigh the slight risk.

Generally causes these rare side-effects if given orally rather than as a topical ointment

Really don't worry. Darrell is right. You need to take large doses orally for most of the side effects.

Tbh we wussed out as the doctor offered the option of using something else that has no such scary warnings. Drops - can't remember what, but fab thing is that you can do it while they sleep. Hurray - no battles over medicine taking. I feel almost jolly..

no, it is a long used and common thing, don't worry.

makes some kids vom though (well mostly babies but don't be surprised if he complains of stomach ache).
