Worth seeing a GP tomorrow?

Hi all. Yesterday came down with a sudden attack of what I believe to be an inner ear infection / labyrinthitis (DH has had this several times so I know the signs). The whole room started spinning and the dizziness made me nauseous and vomit several times. Was like this for several hours and couldn't physically do much more than lie with my head still in a darkened room before falling asleep for 12 hours. It's probably the most unwell I've ever felt. My left ear feels 'full' (like there's water trapped in it) and has done since this started. Today I feel better but still a bit shaky although the worst of the dizziness has gone. Is it worth seeing a GP tomorrow to get my ear checked? I know most infections of this type are viral but is it worth getting checked out in case it's bacterial and needs antibiotic? I'll do anything to avoid feeling like I did this time yesterday. Or should I just leave it since it seems to be getting better even though my ear still feels weird?

N.B: I didn't call out-of-hours GP yesterday (Sat) as they won't do home visits and there was no way I could get to an appointment.

Could it possibly have been a migraine?

I think if you feel better but your ear still feels rubbish maybe make an appointment with the practice nurse to get it syringed. Although this wouldnt be the inner ear, it might help.

Thanks for your reply. I don't think it was a migraine as I didn't have a severe headache, I just felt very dizzy and sick. I think I might see how I feel tomorrow as to if it's worth getting an appointment with GP or not.

I would get it checked out by gp. You may have a treatable infection. Do you have a sore throat or anything?

Thanks Marshy. No but a week ago I had a really rubbishy cold / flu bug (temp of 39c, shivering / sweating, muscle aches etc) which I don't think I've properly got over yet. I seem to have caught every bug going this year (I blame DD bringing back every germ possible each time she goes to a baby group or nursery).

I had this 18 months ago OP, it is horrific. Mine kept coming in random 'attacks', so it's worth going to the GOnto get it flagged early.

Do you drive? My GP told me I couldn't drive until I had gone a week with no symptoms. I didn't drive for 6 weeks. It wasn't ideal but I never would've forgiven myself if I'd caused an accident! It's worth checking this if you do drive.

Yeah I do drive, which does worry me. It came on sat really suddenly and if I had been driving it would have been awful. xx

I would. They can prescribe drugs to relieve symptoms

They will probably give you anti sickness tablets for the dizziness & sickness it's usually viral but sometimes not how do they know which is which?

you are probably right re the migraine, although you dont always get headaches with migraines.

Maybe your sinuses are blocked and affecting your inner ear after the virus- my mum gets terrible blocked sinuses, affecting her ears and causing dizziness. She takes fluticisone antihistame and this does provide some releif.

Yes definitely get it checked. Untreated ear infections can be nasty, I had one as a child, my ear drum burst, some of the fluid leaked from my cochlea (this is what you use to balance) and I still have balance issues now. Best to err on the side of caution

you don't want any infection spreading to the bones in the ear so go and get it checked. I find ear infections generally are NOT viral, so its worth having it looked at.

Thank you for your advice everyone. Will try and see if i can get an appointment tomorrow then (I say try - it's one of those awful surgeries where you have to book on the day for everything so trying to get through at 8am is a nightmare)! Will let you know how it goes. xx

Grrr. Phoned surgery about 10 times so far in past 20 minutes and just get an engaged tone (no ring-back option). I hate their stupid appointment booking system. Not going to be any appointments left soon anyway. May give one last try and then give up. Sigh.
