First Period after birth

I'm just getting my first period through after birth. I'm lucky as my dd is now 11 months so have had a long break, but it's really heavy and painful. Is this normal? keeps bring back bad memories of the labour ward.
Also as it's so heavy I've gone back to using tampons, but they are stinging. What does this mean? Have I got them in wrong or might I have an infection. Hate going to the doctors.

Mines just started... very painful... seems to be normal, judging by the responces on my thread...

I did read your thread, but thought it might be different as you might be having a miscarriage and didn't want to be rude.

I've just got my 1st period too - only 4 months after the birth. I had a coil fitted 2 months ago which may explain it. I don't know if they're going to be regular from now on though?

I used to have very painful periods prior to going on the pill (alternating months). That seemed to remedy it, I wonder if it gets 'reset' after having a baby.
