250 mg Amoxicillan prescribed

but I have an unopened packet of Amoxicillin 500 mg

to save on the prescription costs, can I use this double dose? It was for nasty wound infection but now I ahve a tooth abscess.
seems a shame not to

The doses have increased now. I always use 500mg 3 times daily in an adult.

Report
chocolatelife · 29/04/2015 05:34

oh thanks, i was thinking 500 mg x 2 which is only slightly more than 250 x 3,
perhaps i had better go with the 500 mg x 3 then?

I'm not a professional but I had an abscess last week and was given a dose of 3 x 500mg amoxicillin a day.

chocolatelife · 29/04/2015 05:38

oh thanks.
She didnt want to even give the antibiotics, just talked about the root canal vs removal.
I didnt want her to do it, asked her to send me somewhere else if absolutely necessary.
but this is what my previous dentist did, antibiotics and referred me elsewhere.
did it work TopsyRose?

I wouldn't- that's double the dose you've been determined to need. Can give you nasty side effects. Incidentally how do you have leftover antibiotics from before? Did you not finish the course?

Advice for dentists is only give antibiotics if the abscess is making you systemically unwell. If that's not the case you shouldn't really be taking ABs, you should be deciding what to do with the tooth that's causing the abscess.

catloving,
the antibiotics were changed, hence being left over, for a different condition.

If you take the 500mg you need to take it three times a day usually for 7 days

What armani said. Antibiotics not the right treatment unless you've got a temperature.

Report
chocolatelife · 29/04/2015 06:51

no, the dentist did prescribe them
try RTFT people

I dont think anyone said the dentist didn't prescribe them. Armani and I (both dentists) just pointed out that it's the wrong treatment and your dentists is potentially flouting guidelines/evidence whatever for some reason. Hope it gets better soon.

thanks Grin me too
have gone for referral for extraction, can't bear the thought of a root canal filling, or whatever

I did read the thread. Why ask for a dentists advice and then when one comes along be rude to them.

Report
chocolatelife · 29/04/2015 07:20

your advice was arguing against my dentist, NoArmani, as well as me.

how do I know you are a dentist, or anyone else, I am pretty sure the lady I saw in the blue tunic was a dentist, she had certificates on the wall and everything.

in my defense, I do have rotten tooth/face/ear ache. as you can imagine.

So why did you ask for advice from
Dentists or medical people if that was going to be your attitude?

Confused

Op I'm confused. You ask for help from dentists, some appear and tell you antibiotics aren't indicated unless you have a temp, you say 'I don't want you're advice you might not be a dentist'...
Confused, why ask in the first place?!
