Face tingling/pressure

I've had facial tingling for 3 months after an extreme period of stress where I cried every day for 2 months. Then I had facial tingling across cheeks and by lip and over eyebrow. Mainly left side. I am not breathing properly and I am so stressed over this symptom. Saw a neurologist & had a brain MRI he said brain ok & trigemeral nerve not compressed. He said maybe a virus. Went to dentist who said that my Masseter muscles (cheek) were too tense (teeth clenching) at night. Feeling so stressed over my spasm face when I yawn my face twitches. Any ideas or other peoples experiences? Thank you

When I'm stressed I clench my jaw and grind my teeth at night and have had facial tingling like you describe.

You've been checked out and all ok so maybe the facial tingling is a stress related symptom?

It sounds like you've been through a very difficult time recently so its entirely understandable, but you need to deal with the stress and to relax/rest up. I find even a little bit of chill out time can help ease my stress symptoms. What do you like to do to relax?

Hello Jcee thank you that has made me feel better. I have to try & put things into perspective to try & manage my stress levels. I have been so stressed over the face tingling & nose twitching. In my heart I thought it was stress but I've panicked. Twitching nose was well suited for the Easter bunny x

You poor thing. This all sounds dreadful for you (both your symptoms and whatever has caused your stress)

The good news is that it sounds like youve been well checked over and there's nothing to indicate that there's anything seriously wrong neurologically.

I think it might help to try some meditation and other relaxation methods. My mum had Bells Palsy after the sudden death of my dad. I paid for her to have some massages and a few sessions of facials. I'm not sure whether this is something you can afford?

If not then you could try some homespun relaxation techniques. Long soaks in bubbly baths with relaxing bath soaks, reading nice books, watching gentle films. Do you have friends and family who you can chat to IRL? People who can come and keep you company, hold your hand?

I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time.

I had headache free migraines that started as tingling in my face, neck & spread down one side of my body. As they got worse my vision would be affected and I'd be really sick but it took months for them to progress that far.

I think it was stress bringing it on & I was doing too much at the time. Have you tried mindfulness? Some health boards are now offering it to patients.

An osteopath might be able to help. Stress and emotions do cause real physical symptoms and sometimes, relieving the physical symptoms can also ease the emotional ones.

Thank you. I've really got myself into a state & my head has been hurting too for the last four days. When I seem to have constant pressure/tingling in my face & when I yawn or move my face my nose twitches. I have been to an oesteopath who has been lovely but it's all been very gentle & I have been massaging my Masseter/cheek muscle. My dd was self harming & I was very upset as it broke my heart & now my DH is having big difficulties at work & he may loose his job. It felt better that Jcee had experienced face tingling/twitching too. So worried about it all

I'm so sorry that your having such a stressful time OP. Maybe you need to consider long term how you cope with stress. Maybe just a general massage or a specific face & head massage might help, yoga, mindfulness or taking some time out just for you whether it's to go for a bath, read a book or go for a walk. It might be something both you & DD could try to help you both. I've had a really stressful year but yoga has def kept me sane.

Thank you. It's scary to feel the tingling pressure in my face but I know I've got to try & manage my stress over it & all the stress around me. Off for a walk this morning & I do do yoga but the classes have all stopped for Easter so just about to do some at home now. See the oesteopath in 2 weeks. It's just dragging on & starting to get to me.

I wonder if a different osteopath / chiropractor might be worth considering. I get a trapped thing in my face and can feel the different in one treatment, he is quite physical though, pulls me about and I can really feel the release.

Does he work manly on your neck & shoulders because I am stiff around my shoulder blades. Does he give you any exercises to do?

No exercises, he actually works on my face, he moves my jaw and presses inside my mouth and also works on my spine. My problem is different to yours but sometimes more manipulation is required.

The oesteopath is a cranial osteopath & she works on my face very gently & I have to massage the muscle in my mouth. Still waiting for a breakthrough

Do you massage the muscle inside your mouth? Can you tell me your technique?

Using ibuprofen gel outside the mouth can be helpful for the masseter muscle as well. Has anyone given you any jaw exercises to help? I'm watching with interest as I think I'm seeing more of these issues day to day in (dental) practice and they can be tricky to resolve. It's hard to rest the jaw and for some people IT seems that it's the first and longest physical manifestation of stress.

MrsMorton: I would suggest having a coffee with your local osteopath! I am in Switzerland where complimentary medicine is much more common (and paid for by health insurance). We have a dentist who works along side an osteopath, helps with braces particularly but also other craniofacial facial issues. I know my osteopath in the UK was only too happy to share thoughts and techniques with other local health practitioners!!

Hello I am seeing my osteopath tomorrow as I have also had a headache for 5 days :( she showed me where to press it is in the 'notch' between your gums but it is something an oesteopath would be able to show you. This extra headache is really wearing me down :(

Hmm, in central london and I find a very big range of competence/openness. Will find a friendly one!!

The oesteopath thinks my jaw is softening so I've got to keep massaging. Worried about my 5 day headache but it's probably sinus irritating what is already a problem. Reading a book & trying to relax & booked yoga tomorrow.

I am an armchair alternative health user so in no way qualified but I have read and tried out a lot. Your headaches and face pain sound awful.

So, what would I do (apart from the osteopath and the relaxation)...

Keep hydrated. Camomile tea, chicken broth, avoid tannin, coffee, peppermint, fennel. I would also avoid sugar, citrus fruits, and eat anti inflammatory foods like garlic, fresh turmeric, coconut oil (added Ed to cooked rice) lots of raw vegetables, clean no additive foods like rice, chicken, fish.

Massage your hands and feet, if you find a painful place, massage gently in a circular motion. Have an Epsom salts bath.

Use essential oils in the bath, for massaging your hands and feet and on your temples, a few drops on your pillow and in a bowl of water in the room you are in: 5 drops of Camomile, 7 drops of Lavender, 5 drops of Niaoli in 30ml of carrier oil. Inhaling the oil should help to clear your sinuses. Avoid using more stimulating oils like eucalyptus, pine, basil, Rosemary etc.

MrsMorton: who knows, finding the right friendly osteopath might revolutionize both of your practices and help your clients!! (My friendly osteopath was in sleepy Yorkshire and I completely understand what you mean about different ranges of competencies and openness, it is a very individual skill and every osteopath I have seen works in a different way!)

Thank you for all the tips. Sometimes it's finding the right key. The headache has thrown me a bit but it could be a cold & sinus. I need a break soon. Stuff always changes. I just want mine to change soon

Went to hypnotist today who has had good results for stress & anxiety & I'm hoping that will help with the teeth clenching. Straying to get despondent. First real session is next week
