Should he see a doctor?

DS has had a temp suddenly spiking since Thurs afternoon.

Calpol is controlling it, but as we get to the end of the 4 hours it shoots up again (max was 39.5 when he woke this morning... his "healthy" temp is a low 36.2ish).

He is quiet, but smiley for about 3 hours (before calpol kicks in and as it wears off we get a rough hour with lots of miserable wailing and nothing settling).

Some very runny nappies - but except for yesterday lunchtime, he's been off solids so it would be fairly loose anyway iyswim.

His feet are very cold, and keep going slightly bluish - BUT the heating has packed up and my feet are bloody cold too .

There doesn't seem to be anything "wrong" with him (no rashes etc), just this temp suddenly shooting up and the horrible cry.

I'm pretty much of the opinion that while he is still alert, feeding, and the calpol is pretty much controlling temp (20 mins til next dose and he is 37.8 - up for him, but not as high as it has been), that there isn't much a doctor will do, but don't want to be missing something that needs treating NOW iyswim??

Any advice?

Oh - its 12 days since prevenar and I don't know if it is due to that??

I'd take him just to make sure there isn't a throat or ear infection etc that could be causing his temperature.

babylulu had similar last week..not had prevenar yet.

took her to docs - virus..so calpol , fluids etc..just what you are doing

mad hot temp then ok, on and off for 4 or 5 days , off food.

if it makes you feel better..go to docs..then you will know for sure he has nothing sinister

or call NHS direct. 0845 46 47

My dds had runny nappies for a week after prevenor. My HV refused to admit it was that.

But it sounds as though your ds has an infection, as hs is only eight months old, I would take him to the doctors.

Babies with diarrhea and a temperature can become dehydtrated very quickly, keep his fluids up.

ime nhsdirect have always said to contact the doc anyway so if you are worried i would go to the docs. even if it's nothing and they tell you that, at least you can get some reassurance.

Thankyou - I have called and am waiting for a doc to phone me back for a phone consultation... thought I'd let them decide if I need to be seen

Currently shrieking with laughter knocking DD's blocks down... I swear children go out of their way to make you look like a liar to doctors!!!

Typical! Still think you've done the right thing though in calling the doctors.

1 1/2 hr wait at the doctors.... Virus

He is a lot happier in general (think he enjoyed the outing ) - and he learnt how to wave in the waiting room!

Glad everything's alright! It's always so difficult with a baby to know how ill they are, and it's best not to take any chances.
