Vitamin Supplements For Underactive Thyroid

Does anyone use any supplements that help them with the tiredness?

I am on thyroxine and have regular blood tests to make sure my dose is correct. I am still tired though, my doc doesn't seem to take much interest as blood tests show it's fine.

When I say tired, I mean really tired. Exhausted. It's as if the thyroxine makes no difference.

I'm thinking my only chance is to supplement with vitamins. If anyone has any advice, I'd be most grateful.

Are you sure you're on enough thyroxine and your results are optimal, not just within range?

Bear in mind that to support conversion of thyroxine to the active hormone, you need ferritin, vitamin B12, folate and vitamin D at optimal levels as well.

Do you have your actual test results and ranges (the figures in brackets)? As above, it may be that you are in range but not optimal and with scope for a dose increase.

I don't actually know my results, just listen to the doctor when he says "it all looks good". I will ask him for results and try to decipher them.

I am so sick of being tired, it's no way to live.

Ask the receptionist for a print out of your test results and post back on here for advice.
Doesn't sound like things are right.

I've had this, my ferritin was borderline - 55. I felt very anaemic.

I've also been diagnosed with joint hypermobility syndrome which causes tiredness.

The issue I've had for years is they just look at the thyroxine/ thyroid and don't think about other possibilities.

If you can ask for the other causes of tiredness to be looked at - b12, vit d, ferritin and that you can get them into upper good ranges, not just 'ok' to see if it makes a difference. I tried raising iron via supplements and diet and it did diddly squat, went down actually. So you may benefit from proper iron.

The only other thing is that some people need t3. But this is the very last stop, checking tsh is properly managed is the first option along with vitamin levels.

This book is helpful to wave under a drs nose as it states that Tsh needs to be in the lower range and t4 in the upper to few ok. It also mentions that an idea medication would be a mix of t4 and t3 as the thyroid itself makes some of the t3 we need. But this is why you need a good dose of t4, to allow body to make enough t3.

T4- thyroxine - is simply the carrier of the hormone we actually use, t3. The body uses lots of processes to convert it to t3,t2,t1 and needs good iron etc to help support how it uses t3 etc.

Coming back to original q, a basic vitamin could be ferriglobin which has a tad of iodine too
