What could be the cause of an itchy bottom? (not thread worms)

Itchbehindyou · 23/10/2006 13:16

Have treated the whole family for Thread worms (DD definatly had them). I had been itchy before discovering DD had worms but my itching hasn't gone. Mainly late evening/bedtime or after going to the loo.
Its been going on for about 6 weeks now.Not every night/day but quite frequently.
Any ideas what it might be or am i going to have to bend over for the doc to have a look?

Piles? Get the doctor to check it out - they've seen it all before hundreds of times!

treating TW does not always get rid of them they are sods for reinfesting 7-10 days after treatment
Othersie piles etc but you get more than just itching with them..

Was still itching inbetween tablets for worms.
No pain so could it be piles? Never had them before.

I have had thread worms and suffer from piles! There is a previous thread on thread worms which said that the eggs can live for up to 6 weeks and can be in bedding, carpet etc. So bed changing, with a mask, and vacuuming every day is essential to try to get rid once and for all. Plus a separate towel each. Wear fresh underwear going to bed... It is a nightmare, as if you don't have enough washing to do... but is the only way to be sure to get rid of them as well as taking the medication.

The piles can cause itching but for the me the itch is different. There are lots of creams on the market but I have found Proctocedyl to be the best.

Go to your GP; at least it's free (we have to pay here in Ireland 40-50 euro a time). They can put your mind to rest.

Itching after poos is typical of piles. And piles can be external or internal. The itching from worms is mostly in the night or first thing in the morning. Hope this helps ...

lovingbloodfest Don't remember any pain.
NotQuiteCockney The itching is more when i wipe.
I don't like seeing the doctor for personal things.I know its silly!
Is there any creams i can try from chemists?

Sounds like piles to me. Have you felt/looked at the area? Piles look a bit like pimples, I think? They can be internal, too ...

Can relate, though still not sure whether dd ever did have TW or not...

For me, definitely definitely piles. Whether I ever had TW or not, I am clear about the dreaded piles: anusol hc, or any other cream (but the most effective have hydrocortisone in them). Mine are also worst in the evenings, when inflammation generally is at its peak - especially after standing/sitting all day. And after pooing - wiping might be irritating them. IME, internal piles itch - and when they pop out (sorry) they hurt as well. If yours are internal, they probably won't hurt.

As for threadworms, we're still wearing clean underwear at night, changing every morning, not sharing towels, and doing frantic handwashing just in case....but as I never found the energy to damp dust and hoover every single day (33 weeks pg) goodness knows! Have given up - on the basis that if someone has them, we'll see one and know eventually

Itchbehindyou, have you tried the pile creams? Do they take the itch away for a while?

I'm much more itchy during the afternoon and evening than I ever am at night - which makes me doubt its TW with me.

And, have you ever had a look with a mirror, to check for TW when itchy? Thats what was recommended to me, and I've looked endless times over about four weeks and never seen any - but apparently its the best way to tell.

dh has had occasional itchy bum from candida over the years - long before we had a child, or any threat of worms. He puts a little Canesten HC on it, and that sorts it.

Thanks eliboo.
Not bought any cream yet. I did look earlier as i said on here looks like 2 smal tears in the skin.No sign of worms and don't know what to look for if its piles.

Hmm, hard to describe piles - can look anything from one or more flesh coloured pimples to bunches of grapes. I did once have an anal fissure, which bled - it was painful AND itchy, but not the same sort of itch.

If you're looking for worms, best done at night - I've done it a hundred times, running to the loo with mirror in hand, and not seen anything wriggly. I'm amazed sometimes, given how twitchy and itchy I feel, that there aren't any - but I guess piles (and pregnancy) can feel that way too. Get some creams tomorrow and try!

And Tortoise, I have totally given up feeling embarrassed on MN...sadly..never even tried to change names!
