Becuase it buggers around with the bit of your brain that controls balance. Vertigo buggers around with your sense of balance. Put them both together and hey presto - your balance is buggered!

Oops. I think the alcohol affects the brain's ability to receive and send messages swiftly - that's why you can't drink and drive, etc. If you have underlying condition like labyrinthitis, the brain has to cope with that and the effects of alcohol. That's my theory
