my ds has had eczema since he was around 12 weeks (and only on breastmilk then)...my dh has bad eczema in his family (grrr). went to homeopath the calc sulph is working really well, the eczema is under control. he is teething like a demon too (i've read that they're both linked sometimes). she gave him calc for this initially but he is now on chamomilla as and when needed (drops from a pipette...he opens his mouth for them ). seems to help. he was waking all the time and we were getting no sleep. despite having been really really against it a few weeks ago we let him cry it out (i know you'll think i'm a witch for this). going in and out of him room and picking him up wasn't helping and we knew he wasn't hungry. first night he cried on and off 45 mins was AWFUL (not screaming crying, but crying hard). we have never looked back. last night he slept through from 7 pm until 7 am (well, 6.30, but he just talked happily to himself until i went in)...he is so much happier we are so much happier, despite his teething (he has already cut his first tooth) he sleeps really really well at night. at first i worried that we'd 'taught' him not to cry (this is why i was so so against it...i am a hippy, hence lurking on your spiritual threads) but he definitely cries when there's something up...i think this is probably too much info, but i just know what it's like when you're getting no sleep and they seem distressed and it's awful. don't get me wrong i'm sure we will have problems again...but i think we'll be more confident dealing with them...phew...much too much info sorry

Do you find eczema gets really bad when your ds/dd is ill? My ds had conjunctivitis last week (it's true what they say about starting nursery) and his skin was awful. Doctor asked if he was seeing a specialist (had never suggested before, new doctor) and gave us an immediate referral. Taking him to a homeopath on Tues, fingers crossed it helps. Why didn't breastfeeding prevent this?

oh two more things about teething...i think it is totally safe to give babies chamomile tea (obviously not too strongly brewed and cooled down ), secondly, i don't know about yours, but he never could hang onto to teethers long enough to really get them into his mouth for a while...but mothercare do this teething blankets (weird i know) where it is a little blanket with a teething thingy on the corner (i heard about this on mn - thanks whoever it was) they are BRILLIANT...he doesn't lose the teether and chews that and the blanket all day, really seems to help..

homeopathy works mainly by treating the constitution of the person...their whole being...with babies this is difficult as they can't talk to us so homeopaths rely on what the parents can describe...this is why i think that if a remedy isn't working after a while (a week say) you should change it...the first one we tried wasn't working...the second one worked immediately: instant results the next day his eczema was all but gone. he still has it very mildly (i've been weaning him since four months: again something i thought i wouldn't do) so i think as he gets exposed to new things sometimes it flares a little (although never as bad as when he first had it on bf alone). eddm, i think that there are pollutants and stuff around now that there weren't a few years ago, i don't see how else you can explain the massive increase in allergies: more children are bf now than in the 80s i think...

blimey, i'll stop in a minute...i used ashton and parsons powders before we saw the homeopath, but haven't used them since as i'm not sure about mixing remedies...might be worrying unduly though..

thanks Sophable

You are not a witch really. I have let dd cry abit to the consternation of my dh. But I have ear plugs!! But it makes not one bit of difference... still waking. As we have the futon on the floor I can lie next to her and this is soothing and gets her back to sleep... No bf.
Lurk anytime on the other thread... and feel free to participate with hippie comment if u ever feel the urge!

the bath oil is really good melsy...you put a quarter capful in and the whole bath feels slippery (this is a proper adult bath, me and dh do baths with ds in the big bath, so if you use a baby bath you could use just a few drops i reckon.)

i will catch up with you later on other thread, ds is stirring i think!

Thanks Melsy - yup went down to the chemist and they had chamomilla. Also asked for a cream and they gave me a homeopathic one. She is still scratching it - especially when going to sleep. Sleep at night is still dreadful
Have been out all today and she is very tired and in bed very early - we will to the doctor on Monday as it still looks very itchy. Poor wee darling.
