What is going on with this cough of mine?

So basically I've been coughing now for four weeks. It very quickly became a horrible nutty green phlegm chesty cough and I got no sleep for a couple of weeks and had to buy tena lady for the first time in my life! I became really wheezy (as I usually do when I get a cough) so the nurse practitioner at my surgery prescribed me an inhaler (again, as they usually do). No sign of a chest infection.

So fast forward to today (sorry for rambling and tmi!). I'm still having broken nights perhaps every other night or so, still need the tena lady and still occasionally using the inhaler, but now the cough is more like the most unbearable tickly throat ever. I feel the tickle suddenly come on and then it's like my throat constricts like something's gripping it and I cough uncontrollably. Sometimes it makes me do massive sneezes and my eyes water like mad. It many ways it's so much worse than the hacking chesty cough as its sudden and violent (the tena lady essential!!).

I've never had a cough like this before. I'm exhausted and aching like billy-o after four weeks of it. Do I need to go back to the docs?

Ah bum, hate going to the docs, it's one thing after another at the mo!

I don't know about being anaemic citizen, I do take multivits which contain iron. Why do you say that? Because I'm not fighting it off? The doc did put me on iron tabs for a while several months (maybe over a year!) ago but didn't give me more when I asked for a repeat. I do always feel tired, not just with all this coughing.

Thanks everyone x

Why the anaemia question? Curious as I am, and whenever I get a cough, it takes a couple of months to go...but like the OP, not a chest infection - more of a virus that just lingers for many weeks longer than anyone else in the family.

Green phlegm?

Chest infection, you need an antibiotic!

Is a cold / bug going round that lingers on as a cough for weeks afterwards, know lots of people suffering with it (and pulled / torn / damaged intercostal muscles as a result!) try a drop of thyme essential oil in bowl of hot water and inhale the steam, very good for getting rid of coughs, only a drop and keep your eyes closed though as can irritate otherwise. Also witchy brews / teas made up with marsh mallow / elderflower / liquorice and some manuka honey also helps x
