All the symptoms of gallstones. But no gallstones to be seen. So what is this utter bastard pain?

My "gallstone" saga is long, so I won't bore the arse off you all. Just wondered if anyone had experience of getting all the symptoms, getting scanned (ultrasound and MRCP) and not a stone to be found.

My symptoms were so classic that I had medical students sent to me to use me as a case study. The pain was so bad I've been in A&E four times in the last month and admitted twice.

The only abnormal thing they've found is a dilated bile duct. The consultants can't operate to remove a gallbladder that has no stones in it.

But I can't carry on like this, it hurts more than anything I've ever known and I'm terrified of getting a flare up when I'm on my own with the small DCs.

If I were you I would be insisting in an ERCP to ascertain what was going on.

Could you have 'sludge'? Mine were tiny, I had to have an MRI in the end to find them. One went into the duct to my pancreas and they acted and removed my gall bladder once they had treated the acute pancreatitis which was incredibly painful.

Ouch to pancreatitis, Lulu, glad you got sorted. The MRCP that I had was a kind of MRI (I think) and still didn't show anything other than the enlarged bile duct.

Badvoc they've offered me an endoscopic ultrasound, is that the same as an ERCP? Apparently there's a hefty waiting list for non-urgents though.

They sent me home with some tramodol, which is controlling it for the time being at least.

thanks both

I too have been in hospital a few times with suspected gallstones. I've had an xray, gastroscopy, CT scan and ultrasound. So far nothing has shown up. Next week I'm having a biliary scan. OP hope you get some answers soon!

Chloe I get a pain under my right rib and sometimes in my chest, back and right shoulder blade. My GP suggested reflux but having had it while pg I knew it wasn't. Sometimes nausea with it. Occasional agonising flare-ups where I would genuinely have swapped places with myself having a 10lb back to back baby (and that smarted ;) )
