I think I've heard of these but can't for the life of me remember the name - lump on or near joint, painful and hard.

If it is that its not serious but just painful and annoying (IYSWIM).

Sorry not been of much use.

'Ganglion' is what I meant I think - maggiesmama is right.

i would say, if it is, then go to the doc, dont try self-treatment. when my sis had one (from memory a kind of ball of fluid, but dont quote me) several folk suggested she 'disperse' it by whacking it with a large book. it didnt work and it was frickin agony. doc removed it in the end, i think.

Sounds like a ganglion. When I had one they sent me for an x-ray just to rule out other options. There's not much treatment you can operate to remove them but the operation can cause more problems than the ganglion so they tend not to unless its size and position is causing you real problems. Often they go away on their own. Interestingly mine vanished when I was having fortnightly manicures (including hand massage) in the run-up to my wedding don't know if that was connected, though.

I think it falls into the "mention it to your GP when you get the chance so they can check that's all it is but don't panic about it" category.
