Hello everyone, I know there have been lots of threads on this subject but I feel compelled to add my own . I and 43 and have literally taken months to decide on a coil V pill . After deciding to have a copper coil ( I wanted periods weirdly for confirmation of no pregnancy) . I had it fitted about 3 weeks ago and now on my first period. Oh boy is it heavy ...... heavier than I ever imagined. At this rate I'll become anaemic... ?? I'm on day 6.
Shall I wait and see if each subsequent period lessens ? I cannot go through this every 24 days
Any advice would be great , thankyou

Definitely wait. I couldn't do hormones so switched. The first 6 months were heavy but now they are only heavy for 24hr and then manageable. They advise you that the bleeding will improve and wait and see. So I think it's probably too early. I love mine- no hormones is a winner for me

Hi I had my copper coil fitted in March. Was still breast feeding so my periods didn't comeback until about 3 months ago. My periods are still heavy for the first couple of days and then it's not too bad. I think as each month goes on it gets better.

I managed for a year on the coil (between dc2 and dc3 and then for a year after dc3.) generally my periods were about a week long, very heavy and I had to get up a couple of times in the night to change my Tampax + pad during the heavy days. I had two days a months where I couldn't really plan to do much.

It didn't really change that much over the time I had them. Any the major plus was that DH didn't like getting disturbed twice a night and had a vastecomy and things are so much better. I thin I was a bit in denial before as to how awful it was. Saying that though the pill wasn't great either...

I have had my copper coil for 15 months and I love it. The first 8/9 months periods were VERY heavy (had been on the pill for about 20 years so used to v light ones) but not unmanageable so could go to work but needed to change tampons every 2 hours or so. The last few periods have been a lot lighter though so I would say persist for a few months and see how you get on? Much preferable to being on the pill for me anyway - was worried about the long term effects of being on it for so long - so works for me!

I've had mine four years, and my periods are a little lighter than they were in the first few months, but they are still quite... horror movie... compared to pre-coil days. And they hurt like a bastard. But that's only for the first two days or so, and I've got the painkillers/tampon supplies regime pretty well oiled now. On the other hand I do have 'period sheets' and 'period towels' and 'period pants' so it may just be that I've become used to the horror...

It's not perfect but it's the best option for me - hope it works out for you too!

The average time it takes to settle in is 6months. If you feel you can wait that long then do. After 6 months if there's no benefit to you your gyne should recommend you have it removed (and so will you probably!) as there are very little studies showing an 'settling down' after the 6months stage, by then it's either worth it or its not.

Thankyou everyone for your replies, I really value all your stories. As I'm new to the C coil I'm willing to see how it goes / improves for 3-6 months then I'll make my decision ...... I love this forum ??
